I don't know if this is going to generate any interest outside the combat owners but here goes.
Who rides the earliest combat closest to 200,000?
Fun topic :P
Mine is 209199 June 1972

Earliest Combat?

I love that Yellow, Batrider's school bus orange is also a favorite color. Anyhow,
How about Combat wanna be's? There are a lot of 72's with C's stamped on the head, front disk brakes and 32mm carbs that are not Combats, mine included, but for what it is worth, mine is a very early 1972 and i feel it is worth mentioning.
200155...................... I will remove this post if you really really want me to.

Hi Just to bring you up to date on the Lansdowne dampers...Progressive springs are giving firm suspension, Stock are proving to be better.

Thank you for that, John. Even with the progressives they are a vast improvement over stock dampers. Thanks again.

Here's my Combat (s/n 202093 1972 JAN build date) and Marshal Norton's cooling down after a twisty ride following the Gathering of the Nortons sponsored by the Delaware Valley Norton Riders a couple weeks ago.

Very odd. An early '72 yet black clock holders and square taillight? What is the build date? If you have a "C" stamped head and 32 mm carbs, what is not Combat? The cam?

This bike is the finest example of a bastard ive seen. What makes it not a combat is the early engine number, the gearbox number(235xxx) and the frame (149xxx). As a unit, it is sublime and I am very proud of it.

Mine is 201390. It's a Combat, 2S cam, skimmed head, big manifolds, disc, etc. Mistakenly titled as a '71, so I was able to get historical plates a year early! I'm currently running mine with a well set-up drum brake, because I had the parts to do it, and love the looks of it. I've saved all the old stuff, of course.

pvisseriii,
By all means it is a fun posting and your combat is welcome too.
I'd never exclude anyone but your humble position is much to be admired.
It may have not left the factory in such state of tune but you have the carbs, head and manifolds
so they had to come from somewhere. Possible rescue parts from a blown up bike?
Hey if it recycles another commando onto the road who cares how the parts came about.
It's yours and hopefully it gives you much enjoyment in its present condition.
I like the red as well. My frield Russ has the tangerine dream orange which is very cool as well.
I'd like to have a spare set of tins in orange or one of the metal flake colors to swap at my discretion.
The metal flake bronze looked very cool and obviously not a whole lot of out there.
I kept her yellow because it was the right thing to do for this bike as the colors also signified and era in
motorcycling that we riders refuse to let pass.
Raise the glass I feel a toast coming. :)
Keep the vins coming there are some really early responses still in service.

Combat in Interstate trim?

The first production Combats were Interstates, I believe? And I think most, if not all, '72 Interstates (before the factory started de-tuning them) were Combat spec.

hi all ,as lab said,as far as i can remember the first combats were interstates in the blue colour of alphas side panels, all the other models had the option of the combat motor and disk front brake,

I would tend to agree in the inverse....first production Interstates were all combats. The combat roadsters preceeded the Interstate in production. 200976..first combat engine. 212278 first Interstate.

212278 first Interstate.

I've seen references to this "212278" serial being the "first Interstate" before, but I've come to believe it isn't right?

Even allowing for batches of bikes to have been built well out of sequence, that number seems to be way off early '72 production numbers?

That specific 212278 number also turns up as being from "November 1972" when the bronze friction plate clutch was introduced, and also the crankshaft fasteners were changed over to studs, so I can't see how 212278 being the "first Interstate" can be right?

212278 is also later than the first "detuned" 211110 Combat models?

yep was blue, new tank to replace the fibreglass original, speaking of which, anyone know a good painter in England? London/Herts by preferance

LAB,
I too have seen referenced the same vin #'s for the beginning of combat production.
Obviously it is off a bit as we have combat owners listed her on this posting w/ earlier Vin #'s
then the documented sources.
I wonder where 200,000 is today?
Marshal

LAB,
when they detuned the combats at the factory did they ship w/ black barrels or were they back to silver?
Marshal

Alpha,
that is a nice looking very orig Interstate.
Sorry do not know a painter in England but the painter who did my yellow does remarkable work.
He also did Russ' tangerine orange.
