Dunstall liners

I had LA Sleeve make a couple pairs for me recently. The part number is FL-227. When I called to order them, the sales guy was quite entertained, and asked me where I had come up with that part number. I told him it was from an old LA Sleeve catalog that I had saved. He had no problem taking the order, and said it was still a good part number, so you should have no problem ordering more. The listing in the catalog is for "DUNSTALL-NORTON, 810 TWIN 1972."

If you include your location in your signature, you might get more local suggestions. It's difficult when we don't know where you are.

How thick were the sleeves that LA Sleeve supplied ?

They'd be iron. ?
And the originals were quite a thin steel sleeve ??

I heard LA Sleeve also had a part number for 750 sized liners in the 810 barrel, supposed to last a bit longer.

Ken, how much were the liners? Are you planning on installing them yourself? Is it difficult to remove the old and install the new? Given the weakness of the original liners, did you consider lining the barrels to take a stock 750 piston? Do you think these would be available through LA Sleeve?

Inquiring minds etc

My cost for the 810 liners I bought in April 2014 was $90.00 each.

I do plan to install them myself. I have a Dunstall cylinder that I plan to renovate and put up for sale. It's not a difficult process to install the new liners.

I did have LA Sleeve make a pair of these liners for 73 mm bore (750), but that was somewhere in the late '70s. I used them in a Dunstall cylinder briefly in my race bike, but don't recall all the details. I'll see if I can find some info in my old notes. I think I just asked for a set of liners identical to FL-227, but with a 73 mm bore size, instead of 76 mm. I'm sure they would be happy to still do that.

As delivered they are .081" thick, but after honing to size, they will be something like .066". That's about what the ones I removed were.

They are spun cast iron, specifically LA Sleeve's proprietary Moly 2000 alloy, a carbon chrome molybdenum alloy. The original Dunstall liners were also cast iron, but probably not as high quality as modern materials.

If they require a minimum order, I would be interested in a pair of the 73mm liners to fit the 810 barrel. Last time I called them they required a minimum of 4 liners ordered.

A little more on my history of using 750 liners in Dunstall cylinders. Brent's (bwollfie) posts reminded me that we had this discussion last year, and I was able to find my old notes on it. I had sleeved a set of Dunstall cylinders down to 73 mm to meet the rules for the class I was racing in at the time, but only ran them for a short time before boring them back out to 76 mm for use in an engine I built for a friend of mine, who was racing in a larger displacement class. They worked well for a while, although the soft alloy made it necessary to regularly re-torque the fasteners, but eventually the liner broke and trashed the bottom end. That wasn't an uncommon occurrence for 810 kits that were raced.

I should also mention that the $90 price I mentioned was a dealer price. A retail customer would pay the $150 list price per liner.

LA Sleeve may have had a part number for 750 sized Dunstall liners, but the catalog I have doesn't show it. Dunstall did also sell the alloy cylinders in 750 size, so it's not unlikely that LA Sleeve would have a part number for the liners.

Picture of original Dusntall liner on left and LA Sleeve replacements on right. The relief for the con rod at the bottom gets machined after the liners are installed.
