Having just had the frame painted, I am concerned about scarring that paint during reassembly. I have covered the frame tubes with foam pipe insulation for protection.

As I look at the 3 major drive line components I wonder, in what order they are they replaced? I recall the disassembly was a challenge with the frame clearances.

Engine, gearbox cradle, gearbox??

There must be a "best sequence" for this process!!

It would be difficult to put the engine in before the gearbox cradle (the engine bolts to it)!

When I did mine, I did cradle, gearbox, engine. It worked for me.

The workshop manual explains it in a straightforward manner.

Hi Brian,
me too, cradle - gearbox - front isolastics - engine...it is a bit of jiggle to get the engine in, but with an extra pair of hands and judicial use of a jack you can get it in....even fully assembled with cylinder head. The odd small scratch or chip is however almost inevitable.

there is a best sequence...on my 73 you have to place the gearbox in the cradle before you connect it to the engine....

Just finished my 75 MKIII;
1. Cradle rear ISO and swing arm.
2. Engine (complete minus Head Steady).
3. Insert Item 41 of Group 15 (75 MKIII Parts Manual).
Failure to insert to bottom most of the bolts mounting the engine to the first will make it difficult. You can use the swing arm to rock the cradle up enough to get the bottom bolt in without scraping the frame.
4. Place the front ISO in position and secure.
I had 2 men helping me. I bolted a 3 foot piece of angle iron in place of the Head Steady for lifting. Total lift time was less than 5 minutes. The 2 helpers were both healthy middle aged men and I had all the hard ware ready and ready for insertion. All my hardware is in parts bags marked by Group # and Item #. All Group hardware is in its own large Zip Lock bag. The only way I can keep track of stuff.
