Hi folks,
New here. My first post so be gentle 😊
Looking to buy a red 99 deluxe. One like my dad bought new in 61. I'd like to share with him.
I personally love the style of the bathtub bodywork and have found what looks to be pretty good and rebuilt a few years
ago.
My first proper classic too.
Just really want some suggestions and pointers on what to look for, questions to ask, things to poke, before committing. Your own experience will be massively appreciated.

Oh, worth joining noc too?
Thx
Paul

Welcome and good luck with your quest . There are a great many knowledge and helpful folks here - predominantly Commando
folks . I think joining the UK based NOC is a good move as they have a broad base of knowledge for the non- Commando models .
I am about to start in on my own 1956 Model 99 basket case .
I had let my NOC membership lapse a while ago but will be rejoining . I hope you will post on your Deluxe with pictures.
Cheers- RT

Welcome mate

Downside of aging is you are not really well situated to take on a new project. :-(
Have fun. And it IS fun!

Being a current DL owner (had 2!) i can say with some certainty that the bike Bob lists looks very genuine and good value. Where are you located?. the only items i would question are the rubber key surround thats missing and the fitment of later type silencers. The only questions i would ask is what is the bore size , is it linered and what pistons are fitted. good cylinders are impossible to find now. Pretty much everything else is availiable except body panels and seat , but those look good , I can have any bike i fancy ,but the 99 will always be my go to bike. A few non std bits. exhaust rings , pillion rests , and the footrest positions would make it impossible to change gear in proper boots , but a few seconds work to correct. I would convert to 12v and install Ei ignition and LED bulbs , give details of bike and i will look up and critique for you. Join the club !!

There were little in the way of changes made to the relatively short production run. Very early 1959 (constructed ) and 1960 year models had the terry clip mounted seat That soon changed to rear Dzus fastening. I have seen a couple of different battery mountings, Colour schemes were standardised after the first year or so ,but 99 models do turn up in the 88 red/dove combination instead of catalogue Blue/dove . Last ones may have had the later 650 type silencers ,but not sure of that . I think a deal was done and surplus bikes went off to Eastern Europe , most that remained in Uk got turned into Tritons or cafe racers , I converted one to a STD bike red/dove but then it was restyled to a later SS model. The 650 DL must be the most rare production Norton ever , Never seen a live one . Think they went to Russia. Be very wary of tyre sizes . 3.50 x19 rear is what it was designed for . Modern equivalents are not equivalent (!), and will foul the case mounts unless you are happy with well out of line wheels. A 3.25 front is tight . The old Avon Speedmaster and SM will work but are now expensive , There are budget alternatives . Fit extra splash guards to rear enclosure and an air filter . Oil filter kit is a waste of time and very inconvienent . A good motor on modern 20/50 oil will outlast you. Mine has !. Over the years I have made many modifications ,could write a book, except not enough buyers around. The club sells A book of DSN,s (service notes) that is really good and availiable free on line to club members. JOIN THE CLUB!!!

I've been looking for a while and not seen any 650 models.
Thanks for info. Mines red/dove grey.

I had the same fairing on mine but found it too heavy and spoiled the riding experience. Easy to slip off though, dont even have to remove front wheel or mudguard . Rear rack is a very special item . factory orriginal probably .

Fairing is not on the big. Previous owner wasn't a fan, but nice to receive with the bike

Another quick Q..... Do you use fuel additive? I'll check whether valves were hardened as part of the restoration... But as fuels no longer contain lead. Or do you use fuel stabilisers?
Thanks

Leaded fuel not needed, seats were always hard in the alloy head. Made from Brimol. Stabil a good idea. Use minimum ethanol fuel.

I've another question. Last night I read 13 years worth of rebuild receipts from Robin James. Yes it really was an epic rebuild!
However, I read a handover document that said not to use modern light oil because these old girls leak it out.
Unfortunely that's what I have. A gb leak and sump plug leak.
The previous owner tried to sort this but I'm starting to wonder if the correct oils are being used?pic below
This is being used in the gb and engine. However I read in the restore instructions that sae50 gb oil (and I note on here people are using ep90). Is this thicker and more appropriate?
Is bottle below OK for engine?
I've read up on oils this morning but still confused. First classic, in case you haven't realised 😁
