I just ran across this blurb that I saved from the News-Press during the Daytona 2000 week. It's from the race at the Deland airport circuit that preceded the Daytona race. This might have been the year that Steve managed to just beat Gary Nixon to the finish line out of the last corner. Good times in the Florida sunshine.

Not exactly Commandos, but both Nortons have Commando engines.

This is a shot of our paddock area at Daytona. The bikes are my Norton, Steve Maney's Norton, and my friend Eric's home-built frame Honda singles racer.

Pretty hot machines Ken which Daytona always makes me wonder how they could sustain the heat loads wrung out so fast and long. Grew up in Sunshie State when still covered in organe grooves horizon to horizon .

Great pics, and views of the general atmosphere.
BTW, that newspaper pic, did anyone ever ask what the sprocket was doing over there.... !

You must have better eyes than I do! Do I really have the rear wheel on backwards in the picture? The rear wheel is a Barnes knock-off hub with alloy sprocket on one side and cast iron Lockheed disk on the other. I'd like to think I have it right in the picture, but I can't really tell.

I now have that 2000 Daytona Steve Maney short stroke 750 engine in my featherbed race bike, it's bl**dy fast.
I bought it off UK ebay about 6 years ago.
