I've had good success with Nikasil-type plating in an air-cooled 500 single with iron cylinder. With a nicely skirted JE piston and Total Seal rings, this is an excellent combustion chamber (no oil) and shows virtually no wear after about 5000 miles.
As I ponder a rebuild on my '74 Commando, I'd like to hear educated opinions about ductile iron, just a straight bore job on the stock cylinder or if anybody is a fan of Nikasil-type plating on a Commando. Relative merits? Durability?
This would be a street engine that I would want long service, low oil consumption and quiet, smooth running from. Within the design limitations, of course.
