I`m replacing the cush drive buffers in the rear hub of my 850 Commando. There is a thin and a thick bushing. Does it make any difference how they are
installed? I can`t find anything in the manual about it.

Thick pad takes up the drive force side, thin ones the brake side loads. May need to trim edges to get to fit fully easy yet snug-ish. Factory pads just a bit better than chewing gum so worth while to make em out of tougher stuff like tire or conveyor belt or floor mat fiber enforced material.

I did that job this week, the old plastic once were pretty squashed. the new ones needed a bit of a trim with a knife to stay put. I can't see them lasting long....
Getting the wheel back on was a mission as the cush drive bits try to escape as the wheel 'tangs' slide in. Needed a bit of force to press it all home....but all good. I can see that there might be better materials but as George Patton once said " a good plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow" ....

Oh yeah, when I put mine in I put some glue stuff to hold them in place for next time, in their holes not on the paddle. Do check paddles are still staked stable, if not needs some spot weld and grind back.
