Changed my oil and noticed a lot of crud in the plug's screen. Looks like the screen hadn't been cleaned for ages.
Does all the oil going through the pump transit through this screen?

I'd like to put a high power magnet in the middle of the screen. This will only sit in the tread portion of the plug.

Has anyone done the same?

Can finer mesh screens be used?

Does your drain plug have a magnet on it as mind does and it pics up a lot of fine crud.

It's an original brass one which I prefer because it's easier on the aluminum casting than steel.
No magnet in there but there is now. Will see how much stuff it collects.

All the return oil goes through the strainer. Do you have an early bike without the drain plug? I believe Norvil or RGM sell a sump strainer with a magnet already in it.

This setup is nice. Magnetic plug threaded into the larger sump plug makes draining the crankcase easier

Is the current collected 'crud' magnetic? If the filter is already 'crudding' up then a finer mesh will simply 'crud' up quicker. An oil filter should collect all the fines in the oil.
Regardless, a magnet is a good idea for retaining any magnetic swarf or chunks from reaching the oil pump.

I'm going to install a magnafine filter also. What I'm trying to figure out is if this magnet inside the sump plug will prevent it from flowing. Is there a feed pipe which goes into the washer on the top of the plug (held on by the c-clip)?

no feed pipe and any magnet would only catch some metal and not restrict oil flow

Crud was magnetic. I found a few other big metal particles in the bottom of the sump with my finger. Tried flushing it with some brake cleaner but fishing out with a finger seemed to work best.

Barrel was bored and honed recently with new pistons. Hate to think what it looks like now after seeing that crud!

I must ask the question, what the mileage of your bike is :?:
The fact that you have not cleaned the gauge for ages might be the clue-they should be cleaned out with petrol EVERY oil change-without fail.
If your bike is an high mileage engine, say 1000,000 miles –then the crankshaft should be split and the crud cleaned out from the inside.

Not sure of the mileage, but top end has been rebuilt a couple times. Bike is new to me and this is the first oil change after I had the top end redone. Took it for a long ride yesterday and will check the plug again and see how much more crud the magnet and screen picked up.

tpeever,
these are nice for the commando which has a forward tilting engine but the P11 is vertical and there is a skid-plate which contacts the oil strainer nut or is very close. At least it is on mine. That leave that magnetic bolt hanging below which is not really a big deal for road bikes but you would have to drill a hole through the skid-plate.

elefantrider,
I think Jim Comstock came up with a small inline filter. I believe it was for an automatic transmission and you could change out the filter element which would be far better than the original screen either from that plug or in your oil tank.
Give him a PM or search this forum for the filter. I think it is small enough to fit into the battery area.
Edited: found it full-flow-oil-filter-kit-t19497.html

The Magnafine filter arrived and I will find a place for it near the oil tank.
Looks like this bike has original crimped hose assembly.

Just to be sure, is the oil return the forward hose or rear hose pipe?

Front hose nearest clutch cable should be feed from tank banjo (you should be able to follow it an see the banjo ) and rear pipe nearest to gearbox mounting cradled should be return. To check for sure if you are in any doubt disconnect return put end of pipe in suitable container and start engine BRIEFLY oil should come out of pipe. Or if you cut the feed line the tank will empty all over the floor but the return will only loose the oil still in the pipe.
