The original breather line on my '70 finally gave up the ghost. Does anyone have a good way to squash the crimp fittings for the ends of the new line without removing the elbow going into the crankcase ? I could use a hose clamp, but the crimped ferrule looks much better and of couse I'm trying to avoid removing the primary.

Thanks

Greg

Why not just remove the elbow, it just screws out? Then you could crimp the hose on properly with a drilled out nut or similar, then cutting it in half and using a vice.

Hi, I have a tool to do that crimp.

Actually I use a Rigid flaring tool to crimp my ferrules, but it leaves little circular ridges all along the crimp, but it's effective and easy.

Pretty clever. Have you tried screwing the elbow into the case with the primary installed ? It looks like the tubing would get pinched fairly hard.

I see what you mean now, I had to go look at my bike. It looks like you'll never get that elbow screwed in or out of there without taking off the inner primary, especially if there's a tube on it and maybe even if not. I kind of wonder if you couldn't crimp it on with a drilled out, cut in half small pattern nut and some sort of clamp or vice grips? I've got a hose clamp on mine but it's mostly hidden by the S pipes anyhow, plus I'm using 3/8" hose. The original hose was a stepped down rubber hose right at the elbow as I remember. I probably have that end of it in the bottom of my spares drawer, if anyone wants to see it I'll dig it out. It broke about 6" behind the elbow not long after I got the bike and I put a piece of metal tubing in there to splice it.

I have run into a bit of a snag.

The breather hose (pn 19629, supercedes to 06.1876) is more or less 5/16" ID. The breather elbow is 7/16" OD. With a little heat and prestretching it over a 7/16" drill bit shank, I can make it fit. When the breather hose is stretched over the elbow the OD is 19/32".
The ferrule (pn 06.0576) has a small ID of 5/16" and a large ID of 17/32". A little work with a dremmel tool would enlarge the small ID to 7/16", but I don't see a way to make the large ID bigger.

I'll have to see if our local welding shop has hose repair ferrules. Any other ideas ?

That's exactly why I put a 3/8" hose and hose clamps on mine. Plus I wasn't willing to spend $30 or so for a 3' piece of rubber hose that wasn't like the early part.

Maybe you could find a ferrule that will fit somewhere? McMaster, local hydraulic line store?

We called those originals Oetika clips. They come in single sided and double sided which is on my 750. They are still available and the tool looks similar to a nail puller device
[ like an end on side cutter ]. Fit the hose and clip, squeeze one side, rotate the hose and squeeze the other side.

NAPA part number 90-915 hose repair ferrule. $2. Cut the length down by almost half. Shimmed up the jaws on my PEX crimp tool. Looks good. Thanks for the ideas.
