Pulling together a 74 Commando 850.
Can someone tell me the proper Tachometer for this bike. I believe it's part number 06-2279, but is it the 4:1 RSM 3003/10A ?
Thanks

No, it's RSM 3003/15.

Here's another "Correct Tachometer" for a '74 Commando . . . which doesn't match most, but I'm quite sure it's original . . . anyone else have the French made instruments?

Yes, it is correct, as Veglia instruments were usually fitted to the '73-on Interstate models, and Smiths instruments were fitted to '73-on Roadsters.

So mine is currently a Roadster, and has been for a while, considering the age/condition of the Tank and Seat, but sounds like it was a probably an Interstate "at birth" (?) - I only know about 10 years of it's history. Any other characteristics that might indicate that it was an Interstate? (sorry for the hijack)

The tacho could just as easily have been changed.
What about the (MPH?) speedo, as the matching instrument would have been a Veglia 0919 091 9900 (150 MPH + trip)? If the speedo is a Smiths then they are unlikely to be an original pair.

Really appreciate all the constructive comments.
I am now looking for a RSM 3003/15 tach face only for my '74 Norton 850 commando Roadster.
Been looking on Ebay but haven't found a match.
Anyone know of a good source to try, for the face only.
Thanks again,,

It depends on how much you want to spend but Walridge sells reconditioned units and he takes your old one in exchange.
Send him an email. He might sell you one but a higher price if you don't have a core to return.

Thanks CanukNortonNut,
I have sent them an Email to see if they will sell a face only.

AZ,
That is highly unlikely as he does not refurbish these units. He sends them to a second party and gets them rebuilt. then the units get returned to be sold as a complete rebuilt tach or speedo.
Give it a try but I think I know the answer already.

Old thread, but relevant to my bike. It came to me as a '74 850 HiRider. Speedo is Smith s fading green dot while tachometer is Veglia with a smaller faded green dot. Not sure if the mixed set were ever put on at factory. Hadn't noticed the difference for a few months, now it kinda bugs me. Have found a good condition rsm 3003/15 Smiths tachometer for a good price. Do I need to swap the cable, are they different Veglia<=>Smiths?

Cables are same. The Smiths has a shorter body so you need a pair of extension bolts for the bottom.

Thx for the links to the gauge refurb places. I think I met the proprietor of VBC at the vintage bike show this past season. I chatted with him about my bike's clocks and he came over to check it out in person...in fact he's the guy that pointed out to me my tacho was a Veglia. That's where my annoyance with it being different from the speedo started!!!
Anyho, I have sent some $$$ to a guy selling a nice looking Smiths tacho and it should arrive shortly. Guess I'll wait to see is my cable can work with it. Then I'll be placing the Veglia up for sale to help offset the purchase.
