I'm getting my 1973 MK1 850 Commando tank repainted and noticed a alpha/numeric stencil or stamp (C6 28 P) on the bottom side of the tank in silver paint. I believe that this tank has the original factory paint and am wondering if anyone knows what this number refers to?
And should I have the painter save this mark as a matter of authenticity/provenance?

I'm going to have Brent Budgor from Vintage Vendor do the paint and he recommended that I ask this gurus at this forum for any info.

Thanks,
Ray

Commando Fuel Tank Paint Code?

Wish I could help, but about all I can offer is I bought a Candy Apple Red MKIII off the showroom floor in Charleston SC in '75. There was no code on the tank, but I think things got a bit weird there near the end, maybe earlier 850s had a code.

I had a black IS tank that I turned for a profit that had a code like that stamped on it. I'll have to dig around my photos and see what it was.

Commando Fuel Tank Paint Code?

I have a red Interstate 850 tank that I bought off Ebay, so no idea what year it's off. It has the code B 179 D in white paint on the bottem. It's a completely different number to your red tank so I doubt that it's a paint code, unless it's the paint batch code they were using the day they were painted. Maybe it's some sort of date code?

Mine will be painted blue soon.

My '74 had factory paint on it when I got it and it had no code on the bottom. You guys will know you are on to something when Nicholas Cage bursts in looking for the lost shipment of crated Commandos.

I was thinking paint code as well, but I think Russ may be onto something with the Nicolas Cage angle, might also keep a watchful eye for black helicopters.

Brent,

You need to keep a "watchful eye" for the Big Brown truck this coming Monday....

This mystery mark may be the UPC code from British "Dollar Store" inventory.........Oh yeah, that would be The "Pound Store" wouldn't it.
