what is 'normal' clutch sound with bike on centerstand and turning rear wheel briskly by hand? perfectly quiet? I have a noise that sounds like primary chain rubbing but primary chain not moving but hear whirring/soft clicking and clattering sound for sure from clutch area stock bronze plates

There's some play in the plates. They have to slide in the grooves in the clutch center and the basket. How much they are worn can only be determined with examination.

bear in mind there are no commandos around here for me to compare with so I am highly grateful to you'uns when I cleaned and installed the plates there was considerable 'texture' to them

If you are spinning the back wheel with the bike in neutral and engine not running then the clutch will not be turning. Your noise must be from something else. There isn't much turning other than the chain & sprockets, rear wheel and sleeve gear in the gearbox.

A heavy duty wide chain can catch on the primary case and/or gearbox.

swoosh where? gaston county NC i have heavy duty wide chain I reversed master link because it was digging into rear of case

I say chain noise as not much room between chain and primary case.

thanks it sounds exactly like a chain turning but what throws me is I hear it when turning rear wheel by hand but primary chain not moving and I put my ear up to clutch adjustment hole on primary case and that's the point it is coming from for sure

Rear chain is what's close to the inner primary case and noises can be very deciving when things are turned by hand on a centre stand.
