Clip, Mk3 Isolastic Gaiter. Is It Necessary?

Changing my 72 isolastics to the Mk3 type. What is the purpose of this 06-4723 clip and is it necessary to be installed? Thank you for your replies. Jerry

It has some bumps to hold the rubber gaiter in place, the bumps fitting into the indentations used to turn the ring for adjusting the isolastic clearances.

I think if you have the gaiters, you should probably use the clips. The bigger question, IMO, is are the gaiters needed.

I didn't put the gaitors back on mine. But then I only ride in good weather and not that much. If you ride a lot and in inclement weather, I'd use them and clean them out once in a while.

I believe the purpose of that clip is to keep dirt out of the holes on the adjusters. The gaitor has a lip around the inner edge of the large end - this hooks around the lip of the cap behind each adjuster (nos. 24 & 36) and on the non-adjusting side
