Hi All,

I am posting this to test creation of a poll and see how it works in this new forum.

Since we have all been isolated I bet there are some cool photos of your cleaned and polished bikes.
I was thinking about building a photo contest for VIP member to upload pics of their bikes. Then we can vote on the best photo?

Do you think this is a good idea?

Vote now

You have to vote in the poll by saying yes or no. I will let it run until May 18th. If aye, then its a go. Get the Solvol out!

I changed the title to this to open it up a bit:
"Should We Have Classic Bike or Classic Bike Part Photo Contest"

Hey Jerry,

How about different categories?

Unrestored original
Restored
Resto mod
Cafe race
Racer
Special
etc ?

That gets complicated. Would a repainted tank of original color make an otherwise stock Norton restored? What about chrome valve covers? For a single contest, some rules would be needed.

I show my Norton every year in a local event called Brit Jam, put on by the Ct. British Iron Association. It's a wonderful venue that draws a good crowd and lots of magnificent machines. They have trophies for the best Norton, Triumph and BSA as well as show and "ridden" categories for antique, early model, late model and modern time frames. My 74 competes in the late model '71-'94 class and I have taken both Best Norton and Best British Show Bike from that class.

Unfortunately, an internet contest would be a photo comp too. My Norton is lovely, my photography not so much.

Well the poll ended 10 mins ago and we are on. I have already programmed the contest. It should work. Let me open up another thread about it in a day or 2. I got a bit behind with my normal work due to the forum updates, so now playing catch up.

Glad to hear it!

I hope you are able to work out a few different classes, it is VERY hard to vote between a cafe racer and a highway tourer, although both are capable of being excellent bikes and photogenic.

I'm with Maylar on the photography angle, hard to beat a perfectly framed "nice" bike in good lighting with a gorgeous background, as compared to a fantastic bike in bad light with the tail cropped off by the edge of the photo, and a rusty boat motor in the grass in the background.

"All things considered..."

(no offense intended, to anyone who may have had a rusty boat motor in the background of one of your photos, and/or cropped off your tail light...)

I agree - what defines "restored" and what defines as "original" - they are all subjective terms. I would think you need to set some guidelines and have a class or two between original and restored. having an unrestored original is, IMO, damn near impossible.

I consider my 74 as unrestored. (best I can tell) the engine and gearbox have never been separated from the frame and i'm up in the air on whether the cylinder head has ever been pulled. most of the paint is original, but I have done frame and tank paint touch-up, and repainted various parts and brackets. there's been a couple minor mods, a few minor upgrades. I've replaced various wear items, but overall, it's a fairly original, stock example. I identify and consider my bike as a "(original) reconditioned."
