Following on from my previous post re: the poor fitting rear mudguard, which is now sorted with the replacement from AN
So moving on to the next problem, as mentioned on the previous rear mudguard post, the John player was bought as restored but with some fetling to be carried out. The chain guard was catching, what I thought would be simple didn’t end up that way, the chain was catching around the rear sprocket and was worse near the shock mounting tab, in this area it’s really close to the chain and it seems no way of adjusting it? Ime wondering if it’s just a rubbish fitting chain guard?
As anyone else had similar issues?
I have ordered a new one from Andover, so hopefully it will be problem solved.
Typically after ordering I noticed the US seller as a nice looking guard with the cut away for the brake adjustment, which I think is correct for a John Player? Although it does look different to the Andover one? https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/162524282308 Hope the link works.
Any thoughts

The chain is a tight fit and usually crowds the outboard side of the guard.
A common problem to watch out for is the master link. There could be interference if it is facing the wrong side of the chain. Place the open end and free plate with the clip of the Master link on the inside facing the hub. Some "Heavy Duty" chains are not the same as what Andy the Chain man sells. Best to do a search on the forum using Andy Chain. http://www.the-chain-man.co.uk/
He is retiring and has Jason taking over.
Cheers,
Thomas

Sounds a possible Thomas, the chain runs really close to the guard around the rear sprocket...

Why didn’t I see that, using their drop menu for the mk2a and jp it only shows 06.1865, I’m thinking the John Player would have the cutaway?

One of the failings of their parts pages unfortunately, as the 06-5818 chainguard was a Jan. '74 modification.
It could be the type your JPN had originally if the brake plate has the two holes/bungs for brake lining inspection?

you can probably tell its a long time ago since i owned a Norton, ok i have just checked the brake plate and its one of the earlier ones? Without the two inspection holes, so the chain guard without the cutaway is correct for the brake plate fitted on mine. Which leads me on to ask could that be still correct for a genuine John Player? Thinking if that brake plate is pre 74 were Norton capable of using up old stock? Hope that makes sense.
thanks, Steve

Possibly.
What is the date stamp and first 3 or 4 digits of the serial number on the certification plate (which would normally be riveted to the frame tube below the seat on a JPN)?
Only the 065826 inspection type brake plate is listed in the Mk2/2A parts supplement.

Grandpaul's apparently original JPN has the inspection brake plate (and grommets) and slotted chainguard, however, it's only one example.

There is, but i can't get to it at the moment without taking the seat unit off and moving a couple of bikes. Looking at some of the pictures of the bike i have from the late 70's it does seem to show the earlier style chain guard and brake plate.
ill have to learn how to post images on here lol, there are some on the john player Norton group on Facebook.
