Center Stand Issue (2020)

one thing i do even on new center stands is to weld a washer to reinforce the spring hole as it is a known issue.

The way this hole elongated should actually move the spring away from the cradle.

I’ll weld up the hole at some point.

You could test the hole location theory by just detaching the spring from the stand and leaving it in the cradle, see if moving it outboard while rotating it along its travel allows it to clear the head of the bolt

I was gonna guess the same as LAB based on the way the top hook of the spring is moving about as you pivot the stand. Looks like the top hook is being pushed up in the hole on the way up. There's not much clearance between the end of the hook and the radius on the "ear" of the stand where the pivot bolt goes. Mine does that a bit, not nearly as bad as yours. Could be hard to see with the left exhaust pipe in the way.

I’m clear of the bolt head on the inside.

So take off the spring and grind/file a little off the tip of the spring?

Going back to https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/centre-stand-spring-problem.27052/#post-406932 it might be better to address the top radius of the stand? Not even certain this is the issue, but as you said, you're clear of the bolt head on the inside.

I took another look at mine and in the down position there is about 10-15 thou clearance between the hook and the "ear" where the pivot bolt goes. The hole in the cradle shows some wear and you can see the hook jump about a little as you pivot the stand and the end of the hook moves from pointing down to back.

I wouldn't alter anything without a better view of what's going on from the outboard side. GoPro or a bore scope perhaps?

Why dont you just bend the cradle end arm of the spring, right where it bends from the coil, towards the cradle on that side. That should push the coil away from the cradle.

That's also a possibility. I also want to get the other bike on the bench to see how it's center stand works.

Swoosh... we’re #33 posts and a YouTube video into this...

Time to buy a spring a then see what’s what...

I found the easiest way to fit the spring on the centre stand was to fit it before putting the bolts in from the inside out. Put the bolt that is furthest away from the spring in first, then its easy to lever the stand pivoting on that first bolt, to get the second bolt in.

Likewise. I‘m WAY to impatient for the washer insert method !

My cradle hole had started to elongate so on a visit to AN I asked I could see a new cradle to take measurements
Welded up the hole and redrilled a new one.
Once assembled the tang on the end of spring is still almost rubbing the paint of the stand.
IMHO the hole really needs to be lifted be a few millimetres

Center Stand Issue (2020)

Looks like the skate hooks I made as a kid out of a piece of dowel and a screw hook for getting laces tight on my hockey skates.

I just use a zip tie in a loop.

A suitably bent quater inch rod welded to the tube would be my solution. I don't like the hole in the tube method, road crud/ salt could get in there and start rusting your frame tube from the inside out.
