I'm sure this is something simple but the spring is hanging on the nut.

So that the stock (Andover) hardware, but I don't know the source of the spring. The pivots areas are well lube but I couldn't figure out why the center stand hung up when retracting. Well, now I do. The spring is hanging. Are the nuts suppose to be on the outside? Is the spring in the wrong place?

And save your comments about the extra oil and grease, that's all that standing between this bike and rust.

On mine the nuts are on the inside, like yours, but the spring clears the nut by a fair bit.
Maybe reversing the spring would work?

The exploded diagram on the AN site does indeed show the bolt heads on the inside, it also shows no washers under the bolt heads. Those two things may be enough to give the clearance you need ?

Im in the middle of my rebuild and fitted the nuts and bolts to my stand yesterday! The nuts are on the outside. However, to get the bolt through, I did have to bend the spring out of the way whilst pushing it through. This is on a mk3

+ 1 for the bolt heads on the inside, and I seem to remember the kit came with enough washers for under bolt head & nuts... i fitted the washers and have sufficient clearance

Yes, the complete centre stand kit does show 4 washers. And I’ve got 4 washers on mine too.

But the exploded diagram shows only 2, and the individual part list says ‘quantity required: 2’.

Probably not worth getting yer knickers in a twist... if there’s room for a washer, use one. If there’s not, don’t. Either way, it’s ok !

I like your scissor stand, I've got the same one but with the additional frame tube thingies

I'm with you on adequate lube Dave. It is a must for protection..... BTW... Mine has never been off and has nuts to inside which are barely visible through the protective layers.

Is the spring symmetrical? I guess I need to check. On my 750 the center stand is flawless.

I flipped the bolt around and it no longer hit. That was the good news. The bad news is that the spring was hitting the stand and causing even more issues. Using the old washer trick I got the spring off without killing myself. These days we consider that a victory.

As mentioned the spring is definitely not symmetrical. In this picture the left side is towards the front with the right angle bends, the other end (to the right) was a hook and it was in the stand.

The parts book picture is not any more helpful. I'm sure if I search the forum I may find something. I had exactly how @L.A.B. was showing in the picture he posted above.

Ok, well, put everything together and there's still an issue. I'm guessing maybe the spring is worn or bent?

From the best I can tell one of the coils on the spring is catching either the cradle or the center stand on the way up.

This is the original center stand so there could be some wear I'm not accounting for. The spring hole is elongated but from what I can tell that should be moving the spring away instead of closer.

New springs aren't expensive but I don't know if that's going to be enough.

Wallowed out, common issue, you can try welding a washer around the hole, there and at the sidestand spring hole

Your hole is way to one side.

Hmmmm, hadn't noticed that before. This is a replacement stand bought from OldBritts after my original cracked, I've never compared the hole location

Looking at your video, it looks like moving the hole outboard was maybe deliberate to mitigate the issues you're experiencing?

Could be?: https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/centre-stand-spring-problem.27052/#post-406932

This is the original center stand

Are you sure as that looks like the stronger '850' stand, item 54 on the parts diagram and not item 48?

one thing i do even on new center stands is to weld a washer to reinforce the spring hole as it is a known issue.
