Can you run a Mk3 without an electric starter motor fitted, letting the starter gear train run free?

Yes you can, but you will have to make a blanking plate and gasket to blank the hole off.

I have been doing it for years. To my best ability I couldn't get the OEM starter to work well even after rebuilding it.
I gutted all the sprag and gear stuff just leaving the spacer on the crank.
I used the old end peice for the blanking plate with an "O" ring, painted it silver and it's almost invisable.
I filled the hole with a grommet and small elbow to act as a vent for the primary case.
Starts first or second kick; no starter needed!

<---That has MkIII powerplant and running gear. I made a blanking plate and that's where I mounted the horn rather than stuffed up under the battery tray. The sprag and starter drive gear has been removed. It's quite a bit of useless weight when the starter's been removed, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to leave it in there.

If it doesn't start first kick, it's a rare occurrence.

Just to recap, We wanted to know if a Mk3 starter is removed and a cover fitted in its place...........can the untouched, complete Mk3 starter drive gear train remain in place mechanically sound, successfully without issue........until another starter is installed?

Or is there some action needed due to issues?
Thanks

I can't think of any reason why not.

Yes, I did that while my starter was reconditioned.

Having had one lock up the works, I would be inclined to remove the sprag bearing, if this is going to be a planned long term starter-less period..
While the sprag isn't doing anything for you with the starter removed, it still has the power to ruin your holiday!
