I just got the new to me Mark III running for the first time. Started right up and after a few tweeks idled fine and ran strong. There was excessive noise from the cam chain cover so I opened it up and found the chain way looser that shop manual specs. In researching this on the forum I found blogs about a Pioneer brand seal. What is this and what does it replace? Where do I get one as it doesn't show up on parts list. What else should I do/replace while I have this open. Thanks

There is a hydraulic system available for sale on this forum if you search. But you can always just tighten up the adjuster which I would try first. :|

The seal is 04-8023 and pioneer is just a particular name brand.
Did you remove the timing cover or just the inspection port to discover the loose cam chain?

I removed the timing cover after I felt the chain had more deflection than the book recommended through the inspection hole. In removing the cover I found that it doesn't have a plunger or spring that butts up to the oil feed bushing. I've read that this was an attempt on the 3's to prevent wet sumping. Is this something a previous owner would have left out on purpose? I guess I need to get replacements. Also the workshop manual says "short, medium and long bolts. All 12 of mine were the same length. Are mine wrong? Thanks

No, the manual is wrong. Mk3 timing cover screws are all the same length.

Yes it is possible the po left the spring and plunger out but god only know why. They are easy to replace and be sure to get a new conical seal that fits on the pump. Everything else is straight forward.

Also, check to be sure the idler spindle is nice and tight in the case.
