Cévennes

Solo trip , october 16 to 20 .

A little short in time to ride that far , but the Cévennes are really beautifull this time of the year .
Plenty of nice motorcycle roads for all tastes and out of season virtually no traffic .

You certainly are able to seek out the good roads Ludwig. Not that it is desperately hard in the Cevennes.

The photos bring back memories of a trip I did last year when I rented a Gite in Chamborigaud, just down the road from the Col Pre de la Dame.
It is certainly France Profond around there.

Friends who live in the Auvergne near Le Puy are a reason to go that way, and cutting down through the Cevennes, across the river and into the Vercor, (lots of lovely roads there too) before heading south and spending time trying the southern Rhone wines, which just happen to be among my favourites. The spice and body of syrah, the fruit of grenache, mmmm.

I have been back from the Luberon a couple weeks. Outside of the school holidays there is certainly great scope for exploring the near empty roads. Even the popular places are near empty, so it was easy to get into good restaurants, or even sitting on the terrace, it was warm enough!

The Vercors has indeed some spectacular roads : gorge dela Bourne , col de la Machine , col de Rousset , gorge du Nan ..
In fact I rode through the Vercors region last september with my brother , on our way to Drome , Alpes Maritimes , etc ..

That depends on what you call lucky .
These roads are not exactly in my back yard .
To get to the areas I want to ride , I do have to cover some distance :
Alps : 800 km
Cévennes : 1000 km
Pyrenées : 1200 km
Abruzzo : 1500 km
Picos de Europa : 1600 km
Andalucia : 2000 km
etc..




I try to do 3 or 4 trips a year , each 3- 4000 km , alternating between my Commando and my N15 .
Solo , with my brother(s) or to meet likeminded friends .
This year was a good one with 5 trips .

The reason I post about it is to encourage others to do the same .
To use their bikes for what they where intended .
Do not postpone travel plans .
Time is catching up with all of us ..

Vercors, L'Ecrins, all nice. Scary Route de la Bérarde, two-up, comes to mind.

It certainly is....
But your reports do as intended.
My birthday treat this year is a few days in the Pas de Calais. Sadly ignored by many Brits on their dash to the south, I love the great fish restaurants round the Boulogne/Wimereaux area. As I have to bring some of my wine back, I will be in the car, but November/December is not always a great time time for biking anyway when you have arthritis in the knees.
As is often the case, using the smallest byways gets you the best views and scenery, usually all to yourself.
The Nord is not renown for its views, but inland, the wide skies are similar to the Fenland ones here at home. The coastal chalk hills provide those hidden valleys with lost villages with names difficult for anglophones to pronounce. Love them all.

You at least live contiguously with France. Us Brits have to get to and cross the channel which takes up a fair bit of my restaurant/booze budget.

Poor North Americans and Okkers/Kiwis will likely only ever have a rare chance to visit, but they do have beautiful continents of their own.
