Its in the outer gear cover somewhere and fishing for through the oil fill with a magnet didn't find it. Will the cover need to come off for retrieval or can it wait till another time? It cant migrate to the gears can it?

"end cap"... you mean the ferrule soldered on the end of the cable? Taking the cover off is pretty easy, I'd probably go in after it.

Yep the ferrule

I wouldn't expect a magnet to pick it up, it's lead.
I got some of the broke strands with the magnet. I didn't know the ferule was lead. Ah well time to order a cable and gasket I guess.

its easy enough to remove the outer cover etc. Just make sure you use a good gasket. the blue/green ones are too soft [ they seem to absorb the oil and grow weak ] I make my own now. If you had a powerful enough magnet it might work though because the cable is steel. Its usually the cable that breaks very close to the ferule.

The lower end nipples are usually brass, aluminium or a zinc alloy (if moulded onto the cable).

just recently, since i installed a valve to stop wet sumping (not going there with best/worst solutions), my only leak is from the tranny.
wondering where to get the 'good' gaskets so I can be 'automatic oil change' free!
(thinking the original poster will need one too after retrieving his whatachamacallit.)

Its way easier to say how easy outer cover is to get off than stealing the time with mess to do so. i can't think of anything the cap in bottom could foul or damage so leave it to the next guy for a poor opinion of your lazy ways. Probe around enough and might skew the delicate paw spring then can develop your own opinion of how easy it is. If I'm mis leading ya be sure to let us know.

Don't leave it in there, the nipple itself may be soft but the wires that it encases are hard and can do damage if they migrate into the gear cluster. It is a quick job to take the outer cover off why skimp on safety and reliability when it is so easy to solve this problem? You may not even break the gasket if you are careful.

Drain the oil and if you can see the nipple in the bottom with a flashlight you can try to get it out with a piece of gum or other sticky substance on the end of a pencil.

+1 with dave M. Retrieve nipple and fix proper.

Get it out. And the wiry bits. But like you will find you need other things to deal with as in one thing leads to another / might as well seeing as I'm in there... ?

Uh, how can it possibly get to the gears? That would be one nimble cable end.
Having said that, yeah, take the cover off and clean it out. It's a good opportunity to replace the O-ring seals in
the outer cover for the shifter and kick start shafts.

I keep saying Commandos are a real man's motorcycle, which includes how fear-full one is see what they can get away with on their own judgement and understanding of Commando issues. I've ridden 60 miles with 4-5 sheared off 3rd gear set teeth, only interfered with shifting while later racing with a Ducati Monster squad hitting bumps laid over at speed till stuck in 4th. Still it is ALWAYS best to *Always* check in deeply on little issues as may reveal lurking bigger issues and can also upgrade little details like seals. If run long enough to pop off cable end then likely the tranny is over due for complete rebuild refreshment and with what it takes to simple easy take the outer cover off you're over half way to full AMC guts exposure.

Thats what I was thinking but the oil gets to the gears through the inner cover so maybe? I'll investigate once i pop the thing open

Duh we add lube via outer cover cap so theres low down oil openings to gear area but its not at very bottom where wires or cap would end up and nothing in outer cover whirls to stir up em anyway. So who ya gonna follow the angel in one ear or the devil in the other? I love/hate this frequent "how lucky do ya feel punk" decision points.

And there it is. I had some time while waiting for the cable to arrive and went at it. Also see nipple size to oil opening. Its small enough to fit in there and the next obstacle would be the gasket which you can barely make out in the last pic. Peace of mind I guess if anything
