Read lots of posts on hear about this topic. I love the stories from some of you that are very experienced and experts on vintage bikes but still have issues!
Makes my spastic attempts fn rather that painful.

I have made a tool to go in the air impact driver and have just one question:

Do it go clockwise or ant clockwise?
I ask this as one other post mentioned a different handed thread.

Thanks heaps for your answers.

It’s quite a fine thread and could get damaged, I would try a little heat on the Caliper around the cap - but not so hot as to melt the seals - and then try with hand tools first.

ahhhh were's the fun in that!!!! go hit it with an impact hammer... more hP.... (really yanking your chain here)

the hardest part is keeping the caliper from moving around , so you might find it handy to break the cover lose while its still on the bike..

It's a standard right-hand thread, so counter-clockwise to loosen.
Do NOT try to use the long handled tool for this .....

The one I have had for years is stamped 06 3965. It has a long handle and can be used on wheel hub rings also. Never had it fail me when removing the cover. What don't you like about it? I admit it is big and heavy and doesn't fit in the toolbag.

I find after some heat hitting it with a hammer, one with a plastic or hard rubber face, and not too hard will sometimes loosen things up a bit.

Mine came in a nice sealed official-looking bag containing an Andover tag with the same P/N, but is not stamped. It works great for the wheel hub ring, yes. But my cap was on very tight and the tool failed (the pins came loose) on my first try to use it. It seems to me now that I later came across a disclaimer of some sort, advising to be used only for tightening, and not for trying to free a stuck cap? Mists of time...

Hello Bikenut Oz

The tool type referred to by Mr Rick worked for me in conjunction with my torque wrench for additional leverage. I actually did this with the wheel and spindle fitted to brace the fork leg. No heat was required.

It was in tight. This is what happened to the first attempt using my home made tool!
