Hi Folks,
Almost finished the Boyer install on my 73 850. The question I have is...the instructions call for mountinging the “box” directly to the frame with a single plastic strap (tie wrap). This does not strike me as particularly secure, and wonder if others have come up with a better install...perhaps a rubber mounting alternative..or an entirely different method of attachment. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

I used some Velcro. It kind of stays in place with nowhere to go anyway.

Not particularly secure?

If it’s tie wrapped to the frame nice n tight, what can possibly dislodge it??

I add a bit of foam under the box so the tie wrap grips better by the compression of the foam.

Twenty years ago I mounted my Boyer Mark III unit between the spark coils. I made a special mounting bracket that uses the three existing holes in the spark coil mount. I believe the Mark III unit is the same unit as the later Mark IV's. Here are a couple pictures of the mounting bracket. My coil bracket is the later type with the captive nuts. If you don't have the captive nut this type of bracket might be more difficult to use.

Later I ended up mounting an aftermarket voltage regulator between the spark coils. So I fabricated a new Boyer bracket in order to relocate the Boyer unit under the frame's top tube. This bracket consisted of two phenolic saddles screwed to an aluminum mounting plate. On the sides of the phenolic saddles I machined grooved guides for the tie wraps to keep the tie wraps from shifting. The whole unit was then tie wrapped to the upper frame tube:

If you are interested, you can have my earlier Boyer mount shown in the first two pictures above. Just let me know.

Not a great picture, I had to zoom in on an old picture. Some where I found a rubber pad with holes running through it. Zip tied the pad to the frame using two holes and then zip tied the Boyer box to the pad using two different holes. Been like that since 1990

I would certainly be interested in your Boyer mount, PJ. That would be great! How would that work?

Cheers....geoff
