This has been talked about a few times but I found a really inexpensive solution. While searching the Internet for an offset wrench or 1-1/2" socket deep enough to remove the drive sprocket, I came across a listing on Amazon for a "Screw-In Element Wrench". It is for removing/replacing electric hot water heater elements and sells for $4.65.

It's a slightly loose fit, but works fine. I bet it can be found in US hardware stores as well, but I haven't looked.

O.K. but I took the big nut to a welder and he cut deep reach steel plate pieces together around the nut. Then he welded an arm to it. $10. Happy. Tight fit.

You have a welder that will work for ten bucks? Around here you can't get one to answer the phone for that.

I have an element wrench and it gets used for this!

I went with the socket. Sockets can be found on ebay for reasonable sums. Useful if something gets stubborn and you
can resort to the rattle gun.

I cut a deep socket In half and welded a piece of black pipe in between the two pieces

Most auto supply stores have a double-box wrench for installing and removing trailer hitch balls. About $10

"The correct tool"

In my ( limited) experience I found it very difficult to get a box/combo wrench on the gear box sprocket with the engine and gearbox installed, and impossible to use with a torque wrench if so inclined. I might be missing something seeing how this is the only Norton I have worked on but I think a deep socket is the way to go. Just MHO
$7.00 @ Pep Boys and I had everything else at home.
