Blown rectifier... temporary workaround?

There's a short in the Lucas rectifier on my 1971 Commando. I've decided to upgrade the whole charging system on the bike, so have ordered the sparx 3-phase alternator kit, but was hoping the I could rig up a temporary fix while I wait for the new parts to arrive. Can I just bypass the rectifier and charge the battery on a trickle charger, or will this damage other units? Has anyone had any luck with another workaround?

If you unplug and tape the leads from the alternator you can run a total loss system. How long depends on battery capacity and condition. Running without the alternator will do no damage.

If it is only the rectifier that is blown, go to Radio Shack and buy a 25 amp full wave bridge, some even have the same size tabs as the Lucas ones so it's an easy (and cheap) fix.
