I am pricing sleeve gear bearings and have found prices going from 20 something to 80 something? What do you think is the best made bearings and do you have a part number? I no nothing about bearings and would like to use the best quality bearing I can, Thanks.

I just did that one using the "one side sealed" one that Old Britts sells for $25. Appeared to me to be a good quality bearing, but I didn't take note if there was a manufacturer noted on it. I note in looking back at the site that they sell another one for $80. Presumably better, but no further information. Be curious myself.

You might want to call Fred Eaton at Old Britts - presumably , he could tell you why one bearing he sells for $25 and another for more than three times that.

As I say, if you find out, I'd be curious! Just finished my "spare" gearbox, but I plan on doing the one in my bike next winter .

Resurrecting an old thread, because a lot has been said already.

What are the current offerings?
Quality levels?

Are there any from recognized leaders like SKF/FAG/NACHI/NSK etc.?

Why would you spend more if this is what AN supplies, surely a basic bearing, with or without a seal, will work fine:

Surely.

Edit: the first post wasn't mine & it is very old.

To be clear, I am QUALITY searching, not penny pinching as the first post mentions.

Fine, pont taken, but my personal feeling is that most everything AN supplies meets basic quality expectations.

Will spending more get you more 'quality'. Some cases of course it does, e.g. main bearings and layshaft bearings. But I have my doubts on this one.

Did you find many other options?

Certainly your feelings matter, but regarding parts quality, I tend to be a bit more objective. 👍🏻

Not quite sure, what you're picking at here.

🍻

If you do manage to find a branded option it will have to be a NOS part all the big brands de listed the 1-1/4" ID many years back
BEWARE of LJ1 bearings which have the inner track re ground

Thank you. I am painfully aware of the re-ground version. I went through it eight years ago.

The (1RS) bearing in AN's picture is marked "KSM 1654 Japan".

1654 is 1 1/4".
Another branded 1654 is 'Nice' apparently a US bearing company.
I believe this bearing could have a nylon cage. Edit: 'TN' = Nylon cage.
"Operating Temperature [Max] 300 ºF"

Also PEER. "High quality" but seems cheap for a high-quality bearing.

Thank you Les. 🍻

Does anyone know the internal clearance specs of the current available bearing from KSM or other brands
NM.17721 (Double row brake drum bearing).
040098 (Sleeve gear bearing)
060750 (Clutch drum bearing)

In my experience these bearings in OEM bikes had a tighter tolerance like a CN or C2 instead of the common C3. I don't replace these bearings unless they totally fail. Which is very rare. The OEM stuff is /was great quality and fit.

****With one known exception!!!!!***** The L/S bearing with the "loose balls"

I would like to know that as well
