Hey all,

Been out of the loop for the last few months. Between wife operations and everybody getting sick (to include myself) had little time to get back on tear down of the 850.

I got the transmission case out tonight and was able to get the lay shaft out (finally).

The lay shaft bearing seems to have a bit of catch when moving it, will have to get the heat gun on it to get it out. Would it help to put it in the freezer and then heat gun it??

The main (large bearing) seems to roll fine and did not find any Portuguese markings on it. Here are a few pics of them:

What are your thoughts?? Probably just need to bite the bullet and get new bearings all around since I want to get it as right as possible the first time!

I will be spending what time I can getting the rest of the parts out of the case and blasting it clean then prep for putting back together. The teeth all look good as well as the bushings. May have a few parts to replace as I take a closer look.

Does anyone have a pic of the wood engine stand I read about on the forum? I have plenty of wood and am trying to do everything as cheap as possible right now or I would just go and get a stand made of angle iron locally.

Thanks!!

Heat gun or torch to about 250'F generally lets the race drop out or bop out slammed on wood block. I've had em stuck canted so had to hit like 400'F to release. To get sense of faith in the bearings, dry em then slowly roll and roll and roll and roll till the worse combo's all line up for a little twich/hitch sense, then repeat till satisfied it was a flute or repeated glitch to toss out. Like the main bearing OK but sounds like the lay bearing might be time to renew. Freeze bearing and heat shell real good to put back in hopefuly straight and true first time eh. If ya ain't got gaskets on hand no worries mate'. Fill in the kicker o-ring groove a bit with foil or RTV to help it seal. If short style sleeve bushes put a used one in the middle to keep new ones where they belong and not bad ID to oil groove em a bit.

Biting the bullet may cause explosion in the mouth meaning money for medical work and less for the roller layshaft bearing purchase. Get well to the famdamily or come up here for the free medical.

Duh dude if ya ever been in severe pain w/o drugs you learn right away the lead part is what teeth leave imprints in not the harder brass side that chips teeth, sheeze. I often feel teeth clench on next expensive sounds or sights of my Commando sagas.

No free dental here but if your commando hits say a deer at night and you smash up your teeth etc. then all bod. parts would be set good again ,no bill.

Got my garage set up and getting back on trans. Layshaft bearing still won't come out with a propane torch or rigging up my heat gun and letting it get hot for a while. Got a kerosene heater coming so going to try that, if not off to a machine shop.

My trans mount on the layshaft side has a crack on the inside and outside of the mount on the backside of the casing, going to have to find someone to weld that up for me! Ugh!

Been watching the trans rebuild DVD with mick so I feel a little better doing this. Bearings and bushings are gonna cost a bit to get this done!

Hope to get the engine on the stand this weekend if time allows, won't tear it down until trans is back together. Still have to get forks off and the frame can then get cleaned up and decide if I'm going to powdercoat or just leave be and touch it up.

Not sure either about painting tank and side panels, will decide that once done with engine and start getting everything going back together.

Are most of you sticking with he positive ground harness? I keep going back and forth on that one. Jut want to do all of this once and get the bike back on the road.

There no way around spending on this situation. Roller layshaft. ( lots of heat to pull out the old bearing or drop an ice cube into it after the heat then pull out) Fit new 1 st gear bushing too and sleeve gear bushings too. New seals ,gaskets. Positive ground fine as long as you don't forget and hook up backwards. Ain't credit cards grand ? Good luck with the aluminum weld.

No credit cards! I have the cash but want to spend wisely! Will have kerosene heater this weekend so maybe then? Torn between old britts and CNW for ordering parts. They are both great, just don't know yet!?

Strangely familiar situation as wifey and myself are ill from recirculated air-craft colds .And we thought Burma and Thailand would result in sicknesses. Out of the loop means no credit card? How are you going to get cash to said establishments. Hey ,that could be more fun as you could meet with them directly and have a cold beer with 'em in the parking lot.

There's also the FAG ball bearing with the polyamide cage that mick Hemings recommends (what i used) its expensive for a bearing(like $25 from my local bearing joint)

My account has a debit card that is also a credit card so no worries ordering anything. I just don't use credit! Got out of that hole and want to stay that way!! I could go hog wild and buy everything right now but just need to do things a step at a time while dealing with my wife's cancer. I get just a few minutes here and there to work on the bike in between being mommy/daddy and all things in between. Will probably just order the complete kits for the trans from old britts so I will have it all at once, get that together and go to the next step. Will be better organized when the frame is cleaned and/or powdercoated. Will give me a place to keep finished components and will see some movement rather than a garage full of parts!
Big thing is to get all this done right the first time!

Yes, take care of the famdamily ,stay out of debt. A gearbox rebuild is actually enjoyable and rewarding. Noticed there is no hairline crack in between the 2 bearing bores , many boxes develop this over the years.
