After all the trials and tribulations Iv'e gone through in the last seven years with the old girl now she is really starting to frighten me. All the usual things like chainguard trouble , oil cooler probs, hugger fracture, puking oil into the overflow bottle at anything above 70mph, oh and the starter ring gear freewheeling in the chaincase sounding like a bell ringers convention I have forgiven her everything because I love her. But now I'm scared ,the last couple of thousand miles as I approach 19K there hasn't been a drop of oil in the bottle and this worries the hell out of me. It dosen't matter what ever the speed now even illegal ones and no matter how hard I ride her not a drop for the last thousand miles or so, no oil in the airbox, not a misfire or fart just perfect.
Do you think I should just enjoy it while I can, or is this the calm before the perfect storm. Not that I am complaining far from it but somehow it feels like the eye of the hurricane somehow.

Maybe she’s given in and knows you’re the dominant one and now respects you.

I think you should check to see if you have any oil in the motor.:p
Just joking.
It obviously means that your 961 is finally returning the love for all of your patients and the TLC that you have shown it.

PeeBee, mines just clicked over the 20,000km and no oil in air box for about the last 5,000 or more. It’s running pretty fricking good. The only thing that worries me is the clutch, no bad noises or anything just a slight tinkle when off throttle. So I’m gonna take the cover off and have a look soon.

Interesting thought though. There are a few thousand Donnington Nortons out there cruisin’ around garnering glances in a ‘you wouldn’t understand because you don’t get it‘ fashion! How many are having a (relatively) trouble free time?

There’s our smallish band of old misfits gathered as enthusiasts, but in the main to discuss/resolve technical issues. There’s a steady stream of customers for Sir Stu (yes, I believe that Stu’s been knighted) and CG etc. Yes the technical faults and design shortcomings are apparent and well documented, but there are those amongst our number that are having little or no difficulties (this far).

Of course this could just be me being my usual unrealistically optimistic self but, ya have to wonder how many Donnington Norton‘s there are out there happily clocking up the miles and wondering what all the fuss is about? Noting that other marques also have a myriad of technical difficulties.

Did anybody else just hear Voodoo’s head explode!!

That's.......Optimistic! 🤣

Has your account been hacked @Voodooo?
‘Twas I, I cannot deny!!

Sorry Voodooo, I could’t resist! 😁
How often have I ever complained about either of my 961’s? I’ll go on a limb and say never.

My complaint is with TVS parts department. I sent another email and got a response, only to hear crickets again.

This has been going on for many many months.

Not to go down the same old road again, there most have been records of each bike sale. Didn't the authorities go through these records when the company was rolled-up? There must be a clear accounting of exactly how many bikes were produced, somewhere.
Also, Mr Skinner is still employed at TVS/Norton, and he must have a pretty good idea of the total numbers of 961s produced.
This information should be made public.
Who could it possibly hurt to do so now?

@Voodooo that email is from Scott Gibson and I’m pretty sure he left the end of October? You might want to see if someone else has followed it up.

Mine's fresh from the tree in comparison at 14000 miles and I'm also starting to think about long term ownership. To my mind the main thing is regular inspection; if parts are allowed to fail then consequential damage elsewhere can be much worse or terminal from lack of spares. I see a top-end check as really important. My clutch basket seems ok but the resultant damage from failed cush springs or ring gear could put the bike out of action for good - gearbox particularly.

We have yet to see a new clutch basket but if the new parts are as good as is claimed and they are found to fit then a new clutch/ring gear and rocker assembly seems a sensible, if costly, proactive investment. All the other critical known issues like final drive tab washers, gearchange rod etc are easily sorted.

I would like to think that we will be able to start a 'these new parts fit' thread and in time we can benefit from TVS's work.
