I know that my request is a real long shot, but i can only ask.. I am missing a battery tray/box (06-2557) for my 72 and was wondering whether anybody has any dimensional drawing so the i can fabricate one, or is prepared to sit down and take some measurement... It would be simple enough if measurement were added to the pic in Old Britts oo page parts..

There is not too many laying around here in Perth WAust..

Thanks in advance.......

I have a 72 battery tray in shed just up from you in Shelley. I can measure it up tonight and send you a drawing - what did you want a PDF file?

The link suggested it was a battery tray for a Mk2a so might not have fit a 72 anyway.
Nice skills there, well over 40C in the Pilbara today.

However, the one shown in the ebay link isn't the "A" model battery tray, also the Mk1A/2A tray is part number 06-4128, not "06-2557" - ruddy amateurs!

I had noticed that but from experience eBay seem to go by the description not the pictures when it comes to 'problems.

Looks like a nice job and much more satisfying doing it yourself. Regards buying a new one, with fabrications like this the chances of it not fitting are pretty high. We're into double figures here too.... 11 deg C. Not bad for December, out on the bike at the week end.

I fly home next Wednesday for three weeks,if it is anything like last year January can get into the 50's (125F +)

I can assure you that it fits.. I got that number from "old Britts" .............. for a 72............. Might be the wrong color and a homemade copy, but its level to the frame base and rear hoop and big enough for a battery............

Both types of battery tray fit (the frame), but that isn't really the issue, 06-2557 is the correct part number for a "non-A" model tray (not "for MK2A" as it says in the ebay ad.).
It's some of the adjacent components that wouldn't have fitted if you'd made a copy of the "A" battery tray.

I have a Norton Mark IIA Interstate that I am in the process of eventually turning into a Roadster. I also want to keep the ability to switch between Roadster and Mark IIA Interstate. The Mark IIA Roadster left hand side panel is not too common so I decided to use the more readily available side panel which includes a tool tray within the side panel. To be able to keep using my Mark IIA, Mark II and earlier side panels I needed to make a custom battery tray. I fabricated my battery tray from .050 inch and .063 2024T3 aluminum alloy. The end brackets were fabricated from .063 4130 steel sheet, The battery strap itself was purchased from McMaster-Carr and the battery rubber tray is a standard BSA part. I designed it so that the mounting bracket for the Mark IIA side panels can be removed and a different bracket could be mounted in the same place allowing the earlier type side panel to be mounted as well.

I also designed it so that the battery tray can be removed from both cross supports. In doing this the front cross support can be removed allowing easy servicing of the left hand isolastic thrust bearing. This way you do not have to remove the whole primary chain case assembly just to grease a thrust bearing.

So after all said and done the whole battery tray is lighter than the original steel unit and also it makes servicing the motorcycle a little easier.

If you dont have a Battery ; Do you NEED a battery tray .

Well, since you asked - the battery tray also serves as an attach point for the air filter, left hand side panel, oil tank, rear fender and the horn.

At least in the United States, a battery is required on motorcycles manufactured since I believe around 1968. The reason is that the brake light needs to work regardless of whether or not your engine is running.
