Battery Charger Cable

I hate to spend a post on this, but I can't find the answer and my battery is getting low.

I've been reading older posts about the weakness of the stock battery and the need to keep it on a charger (which is what I normally do). The cable coming out from under the seat has some kind of UK connector on it (possibly KET/TM connector?). Am I confused or is there a second cable with a regular SAE connector somewhere? Otherwise, does everyone change the cable as soon as possible or find an adapter?

Thanks in advance!

I should talk to Peter Howes about getting the guy in canada who makes them for Norton Canada to sell them to CNW. But I use that plug on the left above the back tire and a tender if I don't plan to use the bike for a few weeks and over the winter.

I wish I was near the bike so I could see that. So is this a second cable? The connector I saw is actually on the end of the battery status indicator.

I think this is the adapter I need in order to use my BatteryTender ...

If your plug is for a Ctek charger take a look at their products. I stopped using my Battery Tenders and just rely on my Ctek. It has a cold weather cycle, does AGM batteries, and a recondition cycle. Best charger I ever bought.

My 2015 961 came with a CTEK charger plug only , no other type fitted. I purchased a CTEK charger. Check the CTEK website for pictures of the plug and a good video on the benifits of their chargers/maintainers .There are adapters (CTEK TO standard battery tender type) available online, that's if you do have a CTEK plug and don't want a CTEK charger.

Thanks for the posts, Deets55 and Trevorpacker. As I have 3 other bikes that have an SAE connector along with multiple solar applications that use it, I think I will stick to that type and find an adapter. I'm pretty sure the one pictured is the correct one now. I have 1 BatteryTender located in the house and 2 others located in 2 different sheds where my bikes are stored - so I'm kind of committed.

If I may jump to a different topic now. How the heck do you set the odometer units? Or change the time, for that matter? The manual doesn't cover any of this stuff! :?

Hold the button in until it flashes. You cannot set from mph to kph as far as I know. But you can change to 12h clock from 24hr clock. See my CLUSTER manual.

To set from 24 h to 12h hole the black button in when turning to the key, it'll flash unit, press black button quickly to choose. To set time, hold button down firmly until the digit flashes, scroll through numbers with short presses. If your bike is reading km instead of mi. something wrong on the set up. I tried to change mine but was getting an 'ILL" code, which may mean Illegal to tamper with odo. However, you can scroll that too, but I quit while I was ahead. Maybe we should start a " Simon Says " thread. (If of course, Simon would participate)

I had no problem switching the clock units, but is that all you can do? I did not see the clock when I took it for a ride. I'll check for that next time. And I will check the odometer again - I swear it's reading Kms.

You can as well change illumination of instruments by holding the button while voltage is showing. Strength from 1 to 10.

Today I started 'er up, not to ride since it rained all day, but to charge the battery a little. I did pay close attention to the display while she idled and it is now showing a lower number on the odometer than what I thought I saw the first day. And it is in miles. I also saw the voltage as well as changed the time. So I guess it seems normal to me now.

I can't wait to get the adapter I ordered. Starting 'er up cold on a cool day with an under-charged battery took 3 tries. I hope this gets better once I swap out the ignition wires and install the Bosch coil.

You almost wont believe the difference with new coil and wires and iridium's.

Hi Richard,

Why is this? What is the actual issue / weakness with the stock set up and what is the improved set up actually doing / providing?

Just interested.

Yes weakness. Someone told me it helps pass emission testing but I'm not sure if that is true. But sounds good.

Well, the adapter I purchased was still not a correct fit. So to buy myself a little more time for riding I decided to take a Dremel to it and make it fit. It was a success and as long as I am careful with the orientation (since it can now fit two different ways) I can keep the battery on a BatteryMinder when I'm not riding.

At some point I will remove the fuel tank and swap the cable out with an SAE version (of which i have several on hand  ).

Does anyone know if the remote battery charge connection lead is fused.....and if so where is it located.....don't tell me under the tank!

I am reading the schematic and it looks like the factory installed battery charging cable is first fused in the fuse box. The N and P brown and purple wires , this is 10 A . Then its gets to the battery through the main 30 A fuse under the tank . I have a battery tender charging cable attached directly to the battery . This also has a fuse. I never use the factory supplied charging cable , but I could if necessary. ! If this 10A fuse is blown then your gauges will be dark as well . They are labeled as clocks/optimate N - P . The should be 6 fuses and 2 spares in the fuse box.
