Hey Guys,

Hopefully this is a easy one for you guys.

I just switched out my standard clutch plates of the a new set of 850 Barnett Clutch Plates. Purchased from CNW.

The kick start is not engaging. In neutral it doesn't catch allowing me to kick start her. Just pushes through. With the clutch pulled in its a nice smooth swing through. But released it won't catch. Also, Even in gear i can push through with no effort.

This is my first time changing the clutch plates so i am confident that i made some mistakes. Any suggestions with be appreciated. Just to note... I removed all the original plates and replaced them with the new plates. Everything has been replaced except the pressure plate.

Thanks!

850 1974

Did you ask for the reversed groove set specific for that model?
Just teasing as most are away from work desks over weekend.

If stack not thick enough then spring can't press em tight. New 850 Barrnett set is as good as it gets, so is CNW. so not likely. MIght check the ball is still in the crook of the cable rod gizmo. I have had the LH main shaft nut back off so could not tighten up on clutch pack enough to get plates to stick, why now, so not likely, but... Maybe you over whelmed the wimpy clutch locator circlip, you did get a new hand full or them didn't you?

Once you do sort it Barnett says to wet with ATF wipe off to a glisten to help bed in w/o chatter ripples.

On the off-chance that your clutch cable is too short, detach the end of the cable from the clutch activator and convince yourself that the clutch is engaged by kicking through. There are many lengths of cables, many too short, and the nipple may not be seated.

Clutch cable is fine. Same one i had before. Fairly new and worked perfectly.

Here's one...

Do i need to use the original "Clutch Pressure Plate 063768"? I replaced all the plates including the pressure plate.

Currently i only have the Barnett plates and the "Clutch Spring Plate with Center 060770" in the Sprocket.

j,

What is the distance between the top of the plate stack and the basket top? Is it under the 0.300" limit that Fred shows in his Old Britts tech article?

Rick

You state that currently you have only the barnett plates and the spring plate in the sprocket.

This cannot be right, can it?

This sounds crazy, but did you not also install the non Barnett plates, the all steel plates, in the correct order?

Please tell us you were wrong when you stated that you currently only installed the new Barnett plates, and have

the steel ones sitting there?

Sound like you missing a plate.

What is this distance shown in the photo from Old Britts. Should be aroung .050 to the bottom of the circlip groove. Picture shows about .120 and needs at least another .065 drive plate. Your situation seem a little different. Do you have clutch lever play? Can you back off your clutch adjusting screw. As mentioned, check the push rod, clutch actuating arm and cable connection.
Barnett Clutch Plates.

The order should be, friction-steel-friction-steel-friction-steel-friction-steel-friction-Pressure Plate-diaphram

Joe, could you explain?

In your first message, you said:

Everything has been replaced except the pressure plate.

In your second message you said:

Do i need to use the original "Clutch Pressure Plate 063768"? I replaced all the plates including the pressure plate.

Could you verify that you replaced only the original five (bronze) friction plates with five new Barnett plates or did you also replace the original four steel plates with four Barnett steel plates (CNW #703 kit)? But whichever way, you should have ended up re-fitting 5 friction plates and 4 plain steel plates, the pressure plate and spring in the order shown here? http://www.nortonmotors.de/ANIL/Norton% ... &Plate=010

If you fitted a Barnett "four plate" clutch in place of the original five bronze friction plates then you need to fit the thicker 060745 pressure plate.

I misunderstood which plate was the pressure plate. I thought the outside plate (spring plate) was the pressure plate.

I do have the CNW #703 plates with 5 friction and 4 steel. I'm finishing my coffee and going to try to add the actual pressure plate back in. Wish me luck!

Paul's close to right! It did work!

I was able to start her up. Unfortunately i also upgraded to the Sparx 3 system, rebuilt my Mikuni, set my rocker clearances, adjusted my MKIII iso's and changed all the oils.

I have all sorts of self created issues i need to work out before i'm back on the road :?
