BAP petcock warning.

About a year 1/2 ago I bought a set of BAP petcocks after being tired of the stock looking ones always swelling up or leaking. They seemed fine but the last two times I had the tank off I had to tighten the jamb nut that tightens them up to the tank even though I had not loosened it. I had just taken the fuel lines off at the valve. Anyway today I put the tank back on and one broke off leaving the threaded part in my tank & the other one feels like it will break soon too. These are made from pot metal!! And are very week. I will need to look at my reciets cuz I don't think Old Britts would sell this crap. I think I bought them off one of the "eBay" sellers cuz it was easy. Bad mistake. Has anyone else had this happen? I found one thread from 04 but there must be more.

I bought the BAP from OB maybe a year ago. Was a bit dissapointed in the fuel delivery rate, but seems fine on the bike. Don't seem to be made of pot metal. If you got them from ebay, who knows where they came from. You get what you pays for??? They were certainly reasonable at about $35 for the pair at OB.

I broke a BAP and had it's threaded remains in the tank. Completley my fault as I over tightened the lock nut. Simple removal of the remains with a tapered reamer workd for me. Bought a replacement but was more cautious with the " seat of the pant" torque wrench ;^P I was using.

I broke a BAP at the threads just below the tank. It's been a while ago, but I seem to remember that the threads are actually cast and there was an air bubble where it broke. A likely place for a void. I still get the creeps every time I disconnect the hoses. Anyone know what the diameter and threads are on the petcock? Pingle has some adapters to fit their petcocks.

The threads rpatton are 3/8 x 20 for the inlet & 1/4 NPT for the outlet. I suppose it's pingle or does anyone know of any other brands making high quality petcocks?

did you notice with the leaking petcock that you would get air in the line causing to run rough at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle. I'm hoping this is my problem cause that would be an easy fix. Bike ran fine 3 days ago and i can't figure out the problem now.

Traditionally, Nortons used taps threaded 1/4" BSP on both sides (but only one end of which had the conical seat for the union). They should both check out as 19tpi.

I've never had a problem with BAP taps but do use 'Dowty' type washers and am careful to only nip the lock nut. It is also necessary to hold the body when tightening the pipe union.

All the Commando petcocks I have seen are 1/4 BSP, which is 19 tpi. Pingle does not make a petcock in that thread size, nor, as far as I know, does anyone else except those who manufacture them to fit old British iron. 1/4" NPT is close, but not the same at 18 tpi. NPT are also tapered, where the BSP is a straight thread. In a steel tank, it might be possible to drill out the bungs and fit an NPT insert, but I've never tried it. I was able to use Pingle petcocks on my alloy Lyta tank, but only by welding new 1/4" NPT bungs into the bottom.

Hi all, I also snapped off the thread into the tank trying to align the petcock lever outboard and parallel to the frame, also trying to stem a leak, and over tightened the lock nut,when i replaced the valve, I used Dowerty (Dougherty????) seals, now can align both valves easy with very little pressure on the lock nut and no leaks!!!
Will post pics when I am back at the bike in a few days

BAP repair...

My BAP petcocks were about 20 years old and the rubber gasket got hard and set after a long period.
They began leaking so I replaced them with some similar, but with plastic handles, from Eurotrash.
I made some cork replacement gaskets for the BAPs and they now seal well.

The ethanol based gasoline sold now affects gaskets and seals and sealers. Check anything in the fuel flow system for deterioration; filters, valves, hoses, and gaskets. Also steel tanks can oxidize and rust particles will pass through many fuel filters and accumulate in the carb bowl.

In my opinion the best petcocks on the market are the ones from Jim Noll at British Bike Connection, you can get them to fit the stock fuel line set up or straight tube. For use with a Mikuni put a 90 degree fitting on them. They are a bit pricey but well made, work well and look good

I recently installed a set of these from Eurotrash.

Seem to be working fine. The handles for the standard & reserve petcocks worked opposite of each other - handle pointed up when on for one & down for the other. Removing the handle retaining ring & turning it over allowed the handles to work the same.

I just bought a set of the ones from British Bike Connection. I was working close to where the on line seller Steadfast has there shop & they sell them now so I stopped by. Unfortunately they only had the straight push on pipe outlet in stock but I'm OK with it for now & it looks like they can be changed out to a threaded bung if needed. The quality of these seems incredably good. I got a set for $98.00 but that's with me picking them up etc. Thank you Donmeek for alerting me to these, I knew there had to be a real high quality set out there somewhere. Glenn.

Is there any indication there are cheap "knock off" copies of BAP petcocks? I see pricing at $7 each up to $55 per pair. Some ads say "Made in U.K." some say Italy, some say BAP "type".
