Hello,

Norvil Company sell a resistance 1.6 ohm , for commando the technical book gives 1.8 to 2 ohms.(métrix = 1.7 ohms)

The one that sell Norvil (idem RGM) it is the good for one commando ?

Thanks

Andover use a 2.2 ohm resistor on their spare part 55.1141

Ballast résistor

I bought that of Andover but ....... the wires break easily, at first that of left after some hundred kilometers and yesterday that of right not rotating engine by adjusting the advance ...........:(

I indicated it to Simon who sends back to me an other one.

My old ballast resistance lasted 40 years before clicking :(

But what calls out to question me it is that Norvil sold it for commando (1.6 ohms it is above marked) ????? while are needed 1.8-2 ohms for commando according to the technical book .

Is it sufficient ?

Too low on the ohms and you risk overheating the coils, maybe its time to either get an NOS Lucas ballast or go EI using the 2 6V coils without the ballast.

Yes it is what makes me concern: too low Ohms, nevertheless Norvil sell him for commandos and with ref. d'origin ! ! ! !
I had Boyer during 15 years it eventually broke (after many problems) to me 2 feet , in 8 months apart and I know others guys also, since and I am with points.
I look at the friends who have EI to see what he of reliable there, otherwise it will be the one of Tri-spark but that with the box under the tank.

In fact that of Andover Norton (where I buy my parts for 40 years) it is the weld of the wires that breaks, the wires being welded on the male pods and here break.

Either I go bought the one that you showed, or I am going to put female pods instead of the weld on the piece of news of Andover that Simon has to send to me.

I remain persuaded that that of Norvil is not the good ballast resistor for a commando.

But if I find one OUR I would take it.

Thanks very much alls for your help.;);)

As long as you are using a points ignition system, you can replace the 2 six volt spark coils with two 17M12 type twelve volt coils. That way you no longer need to use a ballast resistor. The reason that a ballast resistor is in the system is because Norton had planned on using a starter motor but that didn't happen until the 1975 year model. The ballast resistor would be bypassed giving the spark coils full battery potential while the engine was cranking to start.

I have some experience with the type of resistor shown in the picture. They are the worst! It is basically a tiny resistor in a big heat sink. The original coiled resistance wire in a ceramic holder is much better. Sorry to see Andover Norton selling this thing.

I'm planning going back to points on my MK111 , so Peter I'm understanding I should use 2 6Volt coils with a ballast resistor as per the manual .

On EBay I find only 1.6 ohms.

If you find yours and which she has between 1.8 and 2 ohms I am interested to buy him.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Fanfan, I will send you one on Monday, now I had found the box hidden somewhere in the shed , with six of plus various AAU unit and spares .........!

fanfan,if you cant get one I think I have one,i switched to a boyer and I don't think I will go back to points, let me know chris.
