Hi Guys
just wondering what RON rating fuel ie 98 95 91 people are using in their old nortons and are you using the lead alternative additive like valve master or flash lube ?
thanks
macca

I will only run 98 and i put Flashlub in every second tank of fuel, our fuel in Australia is not the same as they run in Euroupe, our fuel is more rated as thrid world contry fuel, cheap and nasty, but the fuel companies here will always make big profits.

Hi Macca

I find the 95 runs best in carby engines. 98 in injected engines. Flashlube is the go.

I run 9.5 to 1 with stock cam. Never a ping and goes hard. Idle is perfect.

I am like Nortiboy,95 plus using Flashlube as well.98 is too dense a fuel to use in non FI bikes, they run too rich and foul plugs.
91 in bikes is crap.

ok guys
thanks i use 95 in my 2002 bonnie so ill go the 95 in the norton and as i have some flash lube some where i might as well use that
cheers

In California 91 is the highest. I can get Av gas at the local airport for about $5.50 a gal. @ 101 oct
I haven't tried it yet. Maybe this weekend I will.
Problem with that is I have a roadster tank. Too small for long rides.

Hey Guido,
The avgas will work great. I use it all the time because of my F/G tank. It evaporates pretty fast, so don't leave your petcocks open. It smells good too, which means it's probably really bad for you.

When you say 'old nortons', I take it that you mean road bikes ? Most of the Australian historic racers with manxes and twin cylinder nortons use methanol fuel if they are serious. Permitted in bikes made before 1973.

Fuel in the USA is rated differently - something about MON rating, where other places use RON standard.
91 MON is more like something in the higher 90s elsewhere, haven't followed precisely how different ....

This is the Commando Forum, so presumeably this is for a Commando ?!

US/Canadian fuel is AKI or PON (RON+MON)/2 rated.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

Anti-Knock Index (AKI)
In most countries, including Australia and all of those in Europe, the "headline" octane rating shown on the pump is the RON, but in Canada, the United States, Brazil, and some other countries, the headline number is the average of the RON and the MON, called the Anti-Knock Index (AKI, and often written on pumps as (R+M)/2). It may also sometimes be called the Pump Octane Number (PON).

Difference between RON and AKI
Because of the 8 to 10 point difference noted above, the octane rating shown in Canada and the United States is 4 to 5 points lower than the rating shown elsewhere in the world for the same fuel.
