I recently changed heads on my Atlas. I had a commando head on it because it allows a much better head steady, custom made. The head finally needed a lot of attention so I used a standard Atlas head I had on the shelf. It works very well but no head steady, long gone. The original is pretty flimsy anyway. I spent a fair amount of money and time years ago balancing the motor, installing a single Mikuni and a Boyer. Very happy with the results. So......remove one of the elements and see what happens. It now shakes so much I wouldn't dream of taking it to 5000. The point of this is to recognize how vital the head steady is. I hope I can achieve the same results using the Atlas head.

You can with a bit of innovation make your own custom ajustable headsteady.

I have done it on two other featherbeds so I already have a plan to make the headsteady. Will let you know if the commando head is better at reducing vibration or not. The commando head seems more secure than the original...three point mounting as opposed to one point.

Do not run without a head steady on a Featherbed frame I have seen one that was running without one and the front frame tubes had cracked right through a strongly made head steady is very important.

Your head steady forms part of the frame
Fit a substantial head steady and use exact size bolts for the holes

the manx-style turnbuckle has always interested me.

anybody ever used/made one of those?
