This Sunday I am installing an Atlas motor and transmission into it's frame. It looks like there is definitely an order of operations. Any tips? and when do the centerstsand bolts go in? It looks like a Chinese ring puzzle getting the motor plates in.

Engine and box usually taken out in one lump unless engine plates slotted, which is not recommended as it weakens things. Seem to remember replacing stand bolts with box and engine in.

IIRC, the engine and gearbox go in the frame as a unit tied together with the side plates.
The centerstand and bolts are fitted before lowering the unit into final position.

I suppose the gearbox could be slipped into loose fitting side plates first, then the engine slipped into the loose side plates, and everything snugged up afterwards. Somehow, the centerstand would have to be also loosely fitted before slipping the engine in between the side plates.

It has been over 40 years since I have done this, so excuse my hedging a bit.

Last time i did this I fitted the plates loosely in the frame, then lowered the engine into place (again loosely) then the gearbox.
When all were in place tightened everything up
Good luck!

I have the bare frame sitting up on a table and bare cases to work with so I ll make some trial runs before we get into the heavy stuff. In the meantime I will take all the suggestions I can get. It's probably been 30 years since I've done this.

When I converted my Commando motor into my Featherbed frame I made the engine plates for it with my motor leaning forward, when I need to remove the motor I just undo all the top head stay and remove the carbies then undo the 4 engine mount bolts and lift the whole motor, gearbox, primary and bottom engine plates all in one go, the same as when I am installing the motor I have all engine mounts bolted to the motor, gearbox and primary with the engine on the mounts tighten up to the motor, lift it over to the frame slid it in on a angle and when near position just let the motor and mounts drop into position, it just drops in the right place from the weight of everything and just put the engine mount bolts to the frame.
You might have to use a ply bar just to line up the frame holes but mine just drops into the right position every time, on the top front and rear through bolts I have a steel spacer that sits inbetween the frame lugs this is to stop the lugs from bending if you over thighten the engine mounts the two bottom lugs at the rear has 2 seprate bolts.
I am sure the Atlas motor would be the same to lift in position with everything bolted up to the engine plates, I be doing the same when I finaly do my Manxman project.

Which ever side the bike is sitting from the bench lol.

there will one person on each side so it should go easily...fingers crossed.
The frame is freshly powdercoated. I usually wrap the frame in naugahyde to protect it during installation.

Skinning naugas is a lot of work .... tape made from ducks is easier. Mineral spirits will remove any duck residue.:p

Keep us posted about your progress, and pics too.

The whole unit went in fairly smoothly with a third person holding the frame steady. The forks and wheels go on this weekend and it will be a roller.
