Doing all I need to fit the timing cover on this long weekend (in Aus) and found that I need a new oil pump "feed bush sealing washer'. Do you normally replace the shim and bush at the same time, as my w/shop manual states to omit the shim if a gasket is used (I assume they mean the timing gasket)? Is there any trick or something I need to watch out for to remove/refit it?
Having said all that, anyone in the Adelaide area got a spare seal I can grab as there are shops open for a few days? It'll be a boring weekend if the whole job stops now!

Oh, the drama!

The "gasket" referred to in the manual is the 062447 gasket between the oil pump and crankcase: "Very late engines [The manual was published in 1973 so 'late' is '71*-on] use a joint gasket between the oil pump and crankcase joint faces and where a joint washer [presumably they mean joint gasket?] is used at this point, under no circumstances should the conical rubber seal between the oil pump and timing cover be equipped with packing shims"

Excellent. According to the serial number list I have, 1971 bikes start at #141700, so mine just makes it being 144### engine & frame number. I haven't removed the seal yet, do these just pop off easily or will I risk damaging something else if I pry it?

You need to check what's in there (shim or gasket)? As it appears the oil pump gasket was introduced sometime during 1971 production. If it doesn't have the oil pump gasket then probably best to fit one and remove any shims?

It should pull off the oil pump spigot quite easily?

Checked it out, no shim.
Although my weekend of going any further on the bike is shot, at least I've had a chance to check over a few things.
Thanks for your help (again) LAB.

There are 4 things to consider in seal fit of pump to TS cover. oil pump/crankcase whispy gasket, shim under pump nipple, thickness of pump nipple and thickness of TS cover gasket. Here's the recommended combo for all Norton twins below.

Walridge Motors catalog:

Note - Later, thicker Commando type timing cover gasket [06-1092] is recommended for use on all 500-850 twins, but MUST be used in conjunction with oil pump gasket 06-2447 to ensure correct positioning of the oil pump vs timing cover.
Timing Cover all yrs, p/n 06-1092
Oil Pump all yrs, p/n 06-2447
Oil Junction block all yr p/n 03-2044
