ANZAC Day

My Grandfather was at Anzac cove for 6 weeks before he got wounded and sent back to England to recover after that shipped off to France, he died in 1958 3 months before I was born and he still was suffering from effects of mustard gas from the war.
Lest we Forget.

My Great Grandfather was also a Gallipoli veteran who was lucky enough to make it home, ( his son ) my Grandfather, fought in WW2 in Greece and was captured and spent approx 3 years in Oflag VB , a prisoner of war camp. Both men never really spoke about the war until old age and dementia set in, then you could hear and see the pain that some Vets must carry with them.
Hopefully this Ukraine situation ends quickly, so another generation doesn't have to go through what they did .

Battle of Savo Island, August 8, 1942

USS Patterson DD392 approaches HMAUS Canberra to rescue Aussie crew from burning ship.

My uncle Cliff is one of the sailors that can be seen on the bow of the Patterson. Cliff was part of the detail assigned to assisting the Aussie sailors transfer to the Patterson.

I'm in the middle of reading a book called American Caesar about Douglas MacArthur. It amazes me that (according to the book) he was revered by the Australian's and New Zealanders during the pacific campaign, despite the fact he gave most all the credit for success to US troops. And the US troops for the most part thought he was a pompous ass.
No matter-Here's to heros everywhere.
