They are ripping up tracks to make "rail trails" walking/bicycling paths.
This one is in Sudbury, MA (Western suburb of Boston)
Lackawanna steel mill near Scranton (very historic place to work in the metal trade)

Any Railroad historians?

Just as well. The only railroad with a worse record than Norfolk southern is MBTA

Talk about the law of unintended consequences…

If their serious about reducing omissions from personal vehicles we will need MORE rail network.

We learnt that here where we ripped up thousands of miles of track following the govts decision in the 1960s that roads were the future…

Passenger train travel in USA is a thing of the past. Commuter trains and freight is about all that’s left, I think their doing well especially freight. I live 50 years next to a busy freight line in the 70’s not real busy today same track 30 -50 really long trains everyday. Rail roads have greatly improved the track conditions and maintenance since the 70’s but dang check the bridges almost all rail road bridges are a mass of rust with almost no maintenance that I can see which is scary cause these bridges are old really really old built for slow speed old trains .

Same been happening here , for 20 yrs or so , our very narrow secondary roads get clogged by transport trucks taking essentials to all the small towns and villages , only one real city Halifax , funny the freight trains load up with containers there then straight through the downtown to all points beyond , if ya want to go Sydney you can drive/ride or fly but you can’t catch the train ….

Hmm, just wondering how to get from Canada to Australia by train (or car for that matter)

At first , I thought you were eating the funny mushrooms , after a second I got it , dah …. Our second largest population is the Cape Breton Regional Municipality ,or in plain English , Sydney N.S. which also has a long and very colourful history , which I think dates back as far as Halifax which was taken by English 1604, from the French whom had been there for a hundred+ yrs ….. cheers!

My mind is a sieve, but years ago I remember a statement that a train loaded with truck trailers , when broke down to a trailer they average 50mpg. Your government doesn't recognize it! Mass transit is the answer but never the subject! Block autos from inner cities and use subways or mass transit! What do we know, we are just mere peasants!

Used to be commuter trains here they called rail liner , could get anywhere and back for a couple bucks in a day , that was up to my highschool yrs , then they started consolidation , they have ripped up most of the track now and rail beds are now trails for walkers , hard to walk to Halifax and back in a day …. But by God they twinned a few of the high ways … who is in charge of our asylum ….

What you don't know is what was in the "slurry" I was in charge of a heavy metal removal process from the water in a steel mill. The end product was removed thru a "limestone Slurry"!

....and we have a WINNER!

"Slurry"

Paying, to haul WATER, if the product could be simply drained....
Gets stuck in the BULLSHIT SCREEN.

In my youth a train close to my house derailed some cars broke open and spilled a load of new Firestone tires and many thousands of gallons codfish oil, it was February and the oil was two feet deep with tires it smelled awful lingered for weeks 🤕

Forgot to mention it was February and the cod fish oil was two feet deep and the cold February temps thickened the oil to a sludge, what a mess.

Funny the things one remembers from their youth.
