I've just ordered a wiring harness for my 73..... I have zero understanding of anything electrical...any hints/tips to be thrown my way?

Take pictures!!! Walk around the bike and shoot. Make sure you are getting sharp photos. Redo if necessary. Then start taking off as much as you can, seat, side panels, etc, and keep shooting. Then as you rewire, take pictures. You might want to put paper labels on things that are not obvious. Trust me, things look a lot more logical and obvious BEFORE you disassemble the bike.

You will be amazed at how many times you will go back to your computer and study the before pics.

Best of luck (you make your own luck).

Thanks, sound advice...however the previous owner stripped it down..I have a roller with engine, transmission assembled and in...im going from there...polished a pile of parts, ordered what wasn't there to polish...electrical has me worried..Ive read about a few " nuances" with Lucas elecs....hoping I can avoid a few mistakes before I start....

Here ya go!

OK, let's start over. Assuming a stock harness, find someone with the same type of bike. If it's an 850, 73 - 74, 750, check. Then:

I just put one on my bike. Got it from Commando Specialties. I just feed it thru the holes in the frame and connected the wires where they layed because it was so well made that they just fell into place in most areas. I used the book, Haynes and clymer to aid in the rest of the connections. My daughter helped me too as I am color blind and have a hard time with blues, greens and browns.
No fires.
Don't let it intimidate you. There will be wires that go nowhere so don't fret that.
