After solving a badly oscillating speedo needle, getting rear brake properly centered and changing oil/filter, took her out for a shakedown run today. Got 3/4 up one of our local mountains where the snow at road sides and wet pavement gave me some concern so stopped up for a minute to get off and walk around. Found a puddle under bike still dripping after shutdown. Rear tire slicked up good and a long trail of oil spots as far down road as I could see.
Tank level showed about half a liter down from this morning's mid mark on dipstick. Oil filter soaked but I was able to confirm it was still very snugly torqued in place. I suspect the return line to or from the filter is the culprit. Near impossible to see those connections.
How does the filter mount release? Is it just the two bolts below the SA spindle tube location?

Got autoclub card out yet again for a haul home. Sure getting my monies worth out of my membership.

are your hoses new?
because the fitting on top of the filter bracket do not have any barbs to prevent the hose from moving off, its possible that you may find the leak at one of them,

you can check where the hoses go into the engine, and where they go/leave the oil tank fairly easily

the barb hose fitting on the new filter brackets are nice if you don't have a filter setup, but it is of no help for the existing ones, i done 2 modifications: the first one drilled and tapped the hole and made up a pair of barb fittings,

the second was to solder a brass ferule onto the end of each stub, which then acts to seal the hose .

I had the oil line to the filter come off last summer after a spirited ride. Stopped turning left at a light. The bike spun 180 taking off...wtf!... inspection had oil raining down from the filter area. Stuck my phone under and took a pic to reveal the end of the hose. Rear tire and fender off to get at it. My battery strap circling the tray had collected the oil line and vibration must have pulled it off. The strap had been there for years. Ticking timebomb.

Barb mod or something required as it always weeps oil no matter how tight the hose clamps.

Many years ago my 750 did this. It oiled the back of my bike and my tire with hot oil. It turned out to be the seal on my oil filter.

Followup:
Got the filter mount released and the guilty party was in fact the hose running up to tank, sheared near the clamp at the mount.
New hoses fitted all around. Heck of a job routing hoses with metal sheilding through the gaps etc. Certainly removing mudguard, horn, air filter would be helpful with routing, but did eventually got hoses where needed.

No oil lost doing this, left oil filter attached to mount as it had just been replaced.

More testing to come.

Tornado,
Watch the position of the clamps on the filter housing to allow for clearance of the trans. You can get them so they are not visible which I think is correct and won’t interfere with anything.

Any indication to how the hose got sheared?

The mount and hoses were recently removed from bike during complete strip down of frame, all by a classic bike specialist. So they had been manipulated and perhaps the stress at 48 yrs service life was too much.

Short test run today and all is well not a drip to be seen (yes I checked oil and added about 200 ml to get back to half 'tween full and low marks.).
On to next issues...

Confirmed the hose clamps are nowhere near gearbox casing.

I am amazed a bit, at the shortage of grease fittings, in a place that beyond any doubt needs them.

Grease fittings?
For what, exactly as "grease" should not be used in the Commando swingarm pivot, only oil?
There is an oil nipple in the pivot cap that is used to lubricate the complete pivot assembly, however, late pivot assemblies were 'sealed' and not intended to be relubricated.
