Just wanted to post that I now have 2k miles on the Alton Estart and it has been flawless. I even learned a way to start from totally cold without tickling the Amals/dumping raw fuel...sort of.
Six years ago I removed the enrichners from the Amals. After installing the Alton, I reinstalled the enrichers, thinking they might act like a choke with the high-speed spinning of the starter. But they don't; tickling was still necessary for starting. However, I have found that I can start the bike using the ticklers but without dumping any raw fuel as normal tickling does. If I press one of the ticklers - doesn't matter which one - at the same time that I press the start button, the raw fuel is pulled into the intake tract and the bike starts instantly. I release the tickler button when the bike fires; No fuel is dumped! Only one carb has to have the tickler depressed to start the bike. THe other cylinder runs rough for a couple of seconds then smooths out as fuel gets pulled in.
But the point is, after 2k miles I can say that if anyone has been considering the Alton, I fully recommend it.
FWIW, if the Amals did have a choke, no tickling at all would be necessary. If the airbox is off and I put my hand over one of the carb intake throats and push the starter button, the bike starts right up. Does make me wonder why Amal used enrichners instead of a choke; I guess there was some reason for it...
