This is a cut and paste from AN news that arrived just and I post it because it is of use to us all:

After the retirement of Ella and Fred of Old Britts, deservedly hailed for Fred’s technical section in their homepage, this will, with kind permission from Fred, be integrated in our homepage. Add various features we other three wrote for the “Source”. The “Technical Support” section of the Andover Norton homepage will be starting from mid-April onwards.

it is of use to us all:
Not really I always get a chuckle when I read these.

The Source ?

Lacing up wheels

"So how can you proceed if all you have is a basket case and no information about the wheels?"

"I got the rim and spokes laced up to rough dimensions from CWC"
From John Healy educating me...".Dave: Central Wheel is NOT in the vintage restoration business. They state this clearly on their web page"
britbike .com/norton

"Taking the rim as a given dimension I normally use a straight metal square tube and then measure from a defined plane of the hub down to the outer edge of the rim."

DC- why would anyone building custom wheels use the edge of a rim?
I always use the center of the rim, since frequently the hot rod guys (SIC) use wider rims.
If using the center... the number would never change unless the hub position changes.

deservedly hailed for Fred's technical section in their homepage,
Around 2000 Ella remarked to me how they really likes my AGTS websites norton tech section articles. I took no offense to them copying my concept, but I did notice they had primarily changed them to INFOMERTIALS. That's ok I guess they are in business to make money for themselves and the "mother ship".
I never made anything for my tech articles and time doing research, often on much more technically difficult topics.

Dave, am I understanding correctly that some articles on the OB site were originally written by you without any mention of that by OB? I can't see any problem with copying a "concept," that's done all the time but if your articles were used without your permission and/or without attributing them to you, that's quite a different thing.

Also the old AN PDF's are still asked for, these were on the old AN website and will now be moved on the new one. The OB technical section was popular, and those that read OB's technical articles don't always read Accesnorton.

As for Joe's wheels he changed the look and dimensions of them a couple of years ago, along with the rest of the bike when it flew nose to tail down a straight, the photos were in the Source some time back.

When you refer to "AN" here, do you mean Andover Norton or Access Norton?

I think the main point of that Andover email was do your homework and look at our tech articles before bugging us with questions so we can get some work done.

Knowledgeable people had been putting together and making improvements to Nortons long before the interweb. Windows didn't exist when I put my Norton basket case together. I'm not knowledgeable though. I just did things I thought would work without thinking too much about it.

I looked at an AGTS site to see what the fuss was all about regarding the clutch rod seal. After looking at the designs I came up with a clutch rod condom for my AMC box an Atlas style clutch I made out of a carburetor vacuum cap that does what I consider to be the same job. Do I owe anyone credit for my redesign of the concept?

I took this cap, and punched a hole in the end of it. Nice tight fit over the clutch rod and snug fit over the end of the sleeve gear shaft thingie. I haven't seen any Hypoid in primary case since. That's about the pinnacle of my highly technical skill. Thanks for doing the heavy lifting Dave.

Clever.... but no use to the Catholics :-)

Nope, never had any problem with OB, it's just the idea of MY tech articles library concept was spoken/acknowledged to me by Ella, then they starting writing their own. Some of their content I do have issue with, but I have expressed it before and not worth bringing up.

Good to hear that the Old Britts web tech content will find a new home post-retirement.

For years the standard response was to refer to the INAO Tech Guide. Unfortunately a printed guide got out of date before the ink was dry.

Then was there something called Captain Norton. Again it was a curated list of suggestions.

Old Britts was popular for the tech info as it was updated as needed and readily accessible. The downside is that it was Fred's perspective. While that has a lot of weight there could be alternatives.

The downside to the forum is there are a lot of opinions to sort through. I can see how it gets overwhelming. The good news is that we review and comment on everyone's opinions.

Facebook is a holy mess. It's fine if you want a daily sermon from Owen...

I think it's great that Fred and Ella handing off this treasure trove of info to be preserved.
Whether one agrees with all the info or not, it would be a shame to lose it.
I commend AN for picking it up.
I wish Fred and Ella nothing but the BEST for wherever life takes them from here on.

Dave,
What was the name of that Norton forum we used to be on before 2003 and the switch to this one?

Integrating some of OB's rich tech content on the Andover website, it's what I call upping their game.

I always found that a good tech section on their website had been lacking, whereras "The Source!" pomp had not! ;):p

And it will be free to view, which is good news in a world where in future it looks like you will need to pay to even say the word Norton.
