in '04 at Ohio INOA rally my Cdo mate Wesley wanted to try new needles so selected some a vendor had told him were 'race' power profile. Well he did not make it past the 2nd gas stop in like 40 miles before he pulled over to remove them. He said he could hardly hold a steady throttle w/o creeping up speed and mild throttle was jerking him forward more than he likes and cut mileage too much for HyRyder tank and second tank on sissy bar. We switched his race needles into Peel Amals and he got her standard ones and both of us were more pleased. There were the needles installed when Peel throttle stuck WO on a start in shed that almost blew tin walls and roof out. They look identical by eye ball to standard ones but seat and gas bill can tell em apart.
How or who could determine what these needles are?

Wes is life time seasoned Commando rider, embarrassed 750 2 smokes in hey day of Combat and over took me going 90 mph from well over a mile behind in seconds to pull me over before tire blew on fender d/t broken axle I could not detect while standing on pegs finger tips on grips. He found these needles were over powering his '71.

I don't see how a "race" needle could be different than a standard needle. For racing you want the best possible midrange and WOT. The standard needle will give you the mid and the appropriate main jet will give you the WOT (since the needle has no impact on WOT).

hi hobot, have a look at the thread{more amal carb questions} and follow the link mexico mike posted,to identify what needles you,ve got,as for race needles ,using pump fuel they will be the same as road needles, however i would say that the two alchohol needles are "race" needles, not heard of anyone using alchohol{methanol} on the street, and no im not trying to put ideas into your head

Ok the low throttle opening response in these "race" needles compared to the 'road' needles would explain why Wes did not like their over reaction on just cruise.
I was laughing in disbelief at him complaining about his '71 almost running out from under. It also explains why I did not find them adding to Peel's top end where jet alone matters. Will see if I can follow instruction to follow link to ID needles, but don't hold breath if requires digital program savy. I've got to put shed then engine together before needles needed, plus have two Mickey mouse 34mm singles on hand. So time enough to send needles to a knowing expert to nail down better than me. It might be a new fad for cafe racers to try on road.
Would be interesting if some one with a sense for it, try these in their Amals for an opinion-reality check.

BTW Ms Peel in peak set up would run out from under me on plain road needles so I did not get that much notice of extra umphf like Wes. Mystery all around yet.
I got more top end out of 34 mm single but more response acceleration to 100 mph with the dual 32's. For mostly sane flinging and riding around I prefer the 32 mm duals. For contesting with sports bikes staying above 6000 most the time bigger carb is better. A 36 mm might of even been best for pure top end but likely a drag in real life.
