I have finally bought a pair of 32mm Amal Premiers. Having read what I can I intend to fit them without chokes, presumably a screw to blank the choke hole in the top of the carb.
Any thoughts please.

Amal do a nice screw to block the hole. All you need :)

yes, do it. all good. you can also use some petrol proof sealant in the hole, and smoothed out wth your finger. My old Amals ran for 30+ years like that.

Hi Peter,
My MKIII with 32 mm Premiers likes to have some choke for a minute after starting . I would not leave home without them!

It's quite well known the 850 amal components and jetting are leaner so a bit of choke is more desired there.
However in colder climates like USA and Canada, even the 750 jetting can use the chokes.... for those who do not put their bikes away when the first leaf falls.
I know this well having driven at 5 above zero (f) for a 2 hour trip and below 32F many times...Now a days I usually don't ride below 40f
Buy the nice neat amal correct screw in PLUG

The AMAL part is: "Screwed Plug", part 4/137A. Caution, the latest carbs come with tops that can be used with slip-in cables or screw-in cable adjusters. The screwed plug will not work in those tops. It's easy enough to block the hole with epoxy or similar.

Don’t know what your weather is like Peter, but I ended up putting the chokes back in My 750 since without them it was a fiddle to start in the cold. Needed flooding and constant throttle blipping.

I really don't understand this, but originally, I removed the chokes on my 932's - had one heck of a time starting the bike. re-installed the chokes, and now the thing starts without issues. problem is, i'm here in florida - 75° plus is pretty much the normal summer low, so I don't use the choke. a little tickle and it starts without issue - the choke lever just sits there in the full off (no choke) position. go figure....

There's been many threads on fitting or not fitting choke slides
i think just do as you please
personally I've never bothered with them on a twin carb British bike
but I always fit /use one on a single carb twin cylinder British bike
cheers

Like Baz, I’ve always left them off and / or removed them from Brit bikes with concentrics. But my ‘68 T120 most definitely needs the chokes after fitting Premiers.

No idea why. It is what it is...

Did you block off the cable hole?

I never used the choke on either Nortons or Triumphs back in the 70s, but nowadays I find that all my Amal Premier equipped bikes (Norton, Triumph and Velocette) need some choke to start when cold and like the choke for a minute or so. I wondered if it was modern fuels being somehow different as I also find my bikes need richer jetting than they did in the 70s.

What is the advantage of leaving them out?

Less cable clutter under the tank.
All my previuous Amal Nortons, I pulled the chokes.
My current 850 with Premiers needs the chokes. Go figure.
I'm in SoCal btw. Moderate temps, Sea level.
