Here a short video I made of the Alton starter for non-Mk3 Commando's in operation.
Video taken at the INR 2011 in New York state.
Alton might bring a similar bike to the Begonia Rallye, Belgium, next weekend.

Jean

No problem with a new thread. Especially since you weren't nice enough to provide a video.

 Look at the thread again, I have TWO videos of Hervé starting and riding off. I will edit my post to say they are videos rather than bad pictures

Photobucket vidoes, awesome. :|

Oops, as I was away for a long time, I checked previous posts, but must have overlooked that thread completely, should have posted it there of course.
LAB: can you perhaps move it? Fine with me.

There is a sprag in there, according to Hervé the sprag overall is more rugged than the original, same principle though (kidney-shaped segments), make Borg-Warner. But Jean had it in his hands, he can tell you more I guess.

Does this Alton starter have an anti-backfire setup? Sprag?

Yes and yes. Alton worked out the bugs when they made a starter for Velocettes, the transfer shaft from the motor and reduction gears to the small sprocket is in two pieces with a polymer coupling that can "skip" if subjected to a great force (such as the motor kicking back and the starter motor turning) The engine can be driven backwards to adjust timing of cams, something the stock Norton starter can't de if I am correct.

Like the Norton starter, there is a sprag clutch, but unlike the stock Norton starter, the metal is hardened properly so the sprag will not dig into the driven piece.
