A year or so back, I went through a process to mark my Alton-start rotor with a timing mark. I understand current ones are marked from Alton but mine was one of the first of the "new" type rotor and was not marked.

The issue for me is that the the rotor surface lies well below the OEM timing scale and, for me at least, the parallax involved can make the timing "change" by 4-5 degrees just by looking at it at a different angle.

I was thinking about making a scale that would mount to the stator-mount bolts as opposed to the outer chaincase cover. Has anybody done that - either for the Alton starter or to eliminate any inaccuracies in the timing scale caused by play between the inner/outer chancase?
