have you ever left your house and down the road wondered if you had left the oven on? that is the leadup to my question what function does the spacer behind the alternator rotor serve and is it necessary?

I may be wrong but I think the recess in the spacer (part #31) covers the woodruf key slot for the engine sprocket.

Yes it is very necessary, in order to ensure the rotor is in the correct place, and in order to allow the crank end nut to be torqued up properly. Trying to clamp the rotor directly up against the sprocket isn’t conducive to a reliable torque setting IMHO.
