Hello all, just back from the annual event run by the AVCMC for pre-1980's machines. Great weekend, as usual, and without any of the rain which is usually apparent at some stage. Rode the commando down in company with three others, nary a problem.

great view of the Bay Of Isles and a Norton. Was there myself last year [ without the commando though ]. But mind you, I do prefer the Bay of Islands in NZ.

Looks like a great event.
How does that work, with 2 riders against each other - on a hillclimb ?

Is that someone we know keeping watch on the Model 18 ?

it is a time trial essentially, run up the memorial drive on Mt Clarence, which leads to the Light Horse Monument. Pre-1980 only, so you get everything from First War flat-tankers to big-bore 70's jappers, and everything between. You get two trial, timed runs, and, from that you nominate a time. You then get another three runs, and most consistent against their nominated time wins. There is a minimum time of 36 seconds-break it once and you are warned, second time you are disqualified. So you can be as fast (almost) as you want, or as slow. General hoonery like burn-outs and wheelies are smiled at, as long as you can keep it on the track. They actually try to mismatch the pairs of bikes, to cut down the hazard factor as you head into the first corner at 80 mile an hour, but due to re-arrangements and drop-outs it will always happen, and you get some good drag races. :D
They keep emphasising it is not a race, but as someone said, if you put two bikes behind a starters flag with a start and finish lines, you've got a race

if you are the Rohan I think you are, yes, that would be him. The Inter was supposed to be the bike for that weekend, but a newly rebuilt magneto came back sparkless, so the back up was loaded onto the trailer.

I love the look of all the old codgers, gray beards, and stern looks. Fantastic pics. And your red bike is truly spectacular.

Wonderful pictures! Thanks for posting them. However, when you titled it "Albany, WA", I thought you were talking about the state of Washington, and I was mad that I missed it. Once it came to light that it was W. Aust., I felt better.

Do you know when the first car race was? Right after they built the second car!
