Does anybody have any experience retrofitting one of those 'Dunstall' type caps into a steel roadster tank? I bought a new tank from Burton bike bits, and the cap works like shit! I tried another Monza cap, and had same issue with it binding while opening. I believe the problem is, where the cap hinges from, isn't square to the opening. I've had terrible luck with gas tanks, and should have just bought one from Evan Wilcox. Burton tank is maybe a 4 on a scale of 1-10, FYI.

i am quite happy with my wilcox tank - i just talked to Evan maybe a week ago and there now is a 10 month wait on them!

I knew that there was a 8-10 month lead time, and another g-bone on top of that. Just cdnt afford to wait, and I'm painting mine, which seems like a shame to do to his work. This too shall pass...

How about references for gas tank repair on the left coast? Maybe someone like that, could pull it off.?

Just heard back from Bridge City Cycles in Portland mthrfk'n Oregon. Evidently they think its no problem. Anybody heard of them? Swoosh?

Thanks swoosh! Those guys at little horse are perfect for the job. I've got a bottle of Glenlivet with your name on it.

I'm liking that tank alot!

I was asked by Swoosh where I got my flush mount gas cap. The one from my green featherbed (see cafe-racer-all-finished-t4710.html?hilit=%20finished ) came from a Kawasaki. I bought a complete gas tank with the cap from a wrecking yard, I cut the tank open and salvaged the steel part where the cap screws into and the mouth... the cap did not have any keys, so I went to a local locksmith who made me a set of keys. Total cost, $10 for the tank and $20 for the keys. The cap on my white Commando (see cafe-commando-build-thread-t8372.html?hilit=finished%20caf%C3%A9 ) I think I bought on e-bay. I will try to find a link and post it here. Quality wise, the Kawasaki tank and cap, even if it was over 10 years old sealed better than the new chinese cap. There were a few extras with the old tank, like a better breather and an overfill drain.

Thanks for the help Jean. I found a new one from Custom cycle engineering that I can get welded in. Looks to be real high quality, locks, and is vented.

might sound like a dumb question but what is the reason or importance of having a locking cap? if its for theft,
would someone really steal a cap that probably wouldnt fit what they have, or am I missing something?

I'm thinking it's more to protect the contents of the tank, rather than the cap itself

Ahhhh!!! sugar in the tank from the jealous husband ?

That might only be a problem for you.

Mythbusters did a show on the sugar in the gas tank and it had NO effect on the vehicle... Busted! Now straight ethanol would be a big deal!!!

Mischief :?: :?: Some idiot once stole only the nut from a quick release seat adjuster on one of my bicycles. I had taken the seat off and the quick adjuster was open, they only took the knurled nut :!: :!: I bet they were watching what I would do when I got back to my bike, I fortunately had a bolt and a nut in my bag, so I was off in a jiffy, must have pissed them off more than it did me 8)

Now for the gas cap, I am pretty sure I got mine from here http://www.debrix.com/Vented-Aircraft-S ... 352-vt.htm
